CYLLENE AS A COMMERCIAL INVESTMENT. Great Stallion Sold to South America Has Paid Great Returns to Mr. Bass. Although one might lie inclined to regret that Cyllene has been sold to South America to take the place of the defunct Pictermaritzburg at the Haras Ojo de Aqua, consolation may 1m found in that be will leave two such worthy sous as Poly-melus and Cicero in this country. Regarding the transaction from the purely commercial standpoint. Mr. William Bass, in accepting 23,000, notwithstanding that Cyllene cost him 5n.tHHl thre,- years age. has not. by any means, had the worst of the bargain and the following figures will serve to dis pel some of the popular ignorance which prevails with regard to the earnings of high-class sires, says London Sporting Life. In 1900 Cyllene served at a fee of 100 guineas, and. of course, forty marcs would he the limit. Deduct ten. and regard them as having been put to the horse by Mr. Bass himself. We then have thirty at 100 guineas each, which will yield a total sum of ..~..7o«i. Last season, as a result of the successes gained by Ci -ro, Poly melius. Sweet Mary and others. Cyllenes fee was raised to 300 guineas. Taking it that thirty mares were put to him. he would earn 7,250. As the hors" is not ti. «.• delivered to the agent for his new owners until the end of June next, we can, therefore. credit him with the same amount for 1908. His total earnings on behalf of Mr. Bass may be reckoned as something like 10,250. Naturally, a prudent man. having giv.n such a large sum as 30.00*! guineas for a stallion, would insure him. and if the amount mentioned was covered, the yearly premium would be 2,500 all told. For the horses keep, etc., for the three years lie has been in the possession of Sceptres owner, we can allow, say. . 100, and his share of the expenses of the Glasgow Stud Farm, over the same period, might be written down at ,250. The figures are therefore somewhat as follows: Or. Cylleues earnings for three seasons, say. . . .10,250 Dr. Insurance, premium for three years. .2,500 Keep of the holS" and stud expenses. 1905-8 MM 7,754 , ■*v_».:.ii.i » Further, from this amount we shall have to de duct the difference between 50,000 pmvha-e nrlea and 25.00ti silling pi ice, whicAgivcs a clear profit ,f $.-hi.imm» to Mi. l.a— . iitrtithe usual eaatam that the purchaser pays guinLnl the seller receives pounds. Moreover. l dVHl still retain the produce of such of his own nwM that hav.- foals, are in foal, or are to be covered by Cyllene. and it is practically impossible to estimate their value. Of course. 2.". Mt is a large sum to give for a thirteen year-old stallion, but there is justitir-at i u when it is pointed out that al ont . KH .0oo was given in added money during the Argentine andag season of 1900. At the Haras Ojo de Aqua. Cyllene will have old Kendal as companion. When he was sold a f.-w years ago for 0.100. many people considered Hot the new owner was making a bad bargain, hut a greater mistake was probably never made, for th.-initial outlay has been recouped many times over. For instance, nine colts by him realized an averag • of over 1908.sh,5 H» when sold at public auction fn October last. In •addition, Barsac. the absolute best three-year-old in the Argentine, is a sou of Kendal and Albilla. sister to Charcot. Many of the mares in this well-known South American stud where Gay Hermit was for many years the premier stallion 1. are the dams of high-class winners, and they Include daughters of Galopiu, Speculum, St. Simon. Energy. Petrarch. Gloriation. Keir son of Sterling, Cal-liard. Orbit. Jay Hermit. St. Serf. Queens Messenger. Cauiballo. Peter. St. Angelo, Stiletto IS..11 of Beaudesert, etc. Cyllenes best two performers are from a daughter and grand-daughter of Haui|. ton. but there does not ap| ear to be a represenla tive of this line amongst the OJI de Aqua matr.uis.
