OAKLAND HORSES GO FAST. SUGARMAID EQUALS THE COAST RECORD AT A MILE AND TWENTY YARDS. Smiley Corbett Defeats Centre Shot — Little Jane in Fast Time — Gargantua Runs Consistently for His New Owner — Good Jockeyship, Oakland, Cal., February 24.— With the pr. sence in the saddle of a trio of Jockey celebrities iu Walter Miller, K.ldie Dugan and Willie Kuapp, the racing at Oakland has received a wonderful impetus and today it closely resembled the metropolitan article, iu character. Each of the three riders had one victory to his cr.dit. riding brilliantly on Smiley forlxdt, Oargantna and Benvolio, which one and all owed their successes to superb horsemanship. Despite the absence of any important or distinctive stake feature, the card was of such excellence that supplemented by "an all important contributory factor in the finest weather imaginable, it proved an irresistible attraction to approximately s.OOO race goers and they were well rewarded for their trouble. Well backed horses rewarded the public all down the line, the closing half of the card being captured by warm public choices. The official timers again displayed marvelously fast time, 40J, for the running of the juvenile race, three and a half furlongs. Little Jane, the winner, easily disposed of farmisa, the heroine of the record of 40f of last Friday, the correctness of which was questioned at ,the time, however. Even Right Easy, which the Spreckels filly beat six lengths on that record-breaking occasion, reversed the running decisively today. Sugaruiaid, in the most pretentious race of the afternoon, equalled the California Tecord for one mile and twenty yards, running the distance in 1:9ft, -n octette of fast performers started, including Tavora. Rather Royal and Timothy Wen. Trainer Dr. H. E. Rowell also got in today with Thomas H. Williams string of racers, recently campaigned at Santa Anita. An official explanation of Peter Sterlings failure in the Cup Preliminary of last Saturday was forthcoming today, to wit. that the big Ix rd Esterliug horse is suffering from skin trouble and boils. Meeliek will not start in the Yosemite Handicap next Wednesday. His owner thinks the weight, 120 pounds, excessive. The Derby hero will he sent back to Santa Anita without delay. It is said that Rapid Water, at 130 pounds, will represent Hildreth instead. Botanist, which failed here, has also been shipped back to the southern track. Stanley Fay goes along in the same car and will start in the Los Angeles Derby race next Saturday. Trance and Ocean Maid are two more candidates for Santa Anita stake honors Saturday. Griffins fillies will be starters In the Woodland stake. An attachment was levied against Karly Tide and freston on Saturday in behalf of M. D. Miller. One of De Annans friends furnished bonda for the dissolution of the attachment. De Annan himself was not here, having remained at Santa Anita.
