GRAND BREEDING FARMS IN AUSTRIA AUSTRIAThere There are some magnificent studs for the breeding of thoroughbred and Arab bloodstock In Austria Hungary and one sucli is that at Napajedi Moravia over which Mr Aristide Baltazzi presides He will doubtless be remembered as having been associated with his brother Mr Alexander Baltazzi In the ownership of the famous Buccaneer Mineral horse KIsber which was trained by the late Joseph Hayhoe and won the Derby in 1870 the same year in which Camella and Enguerrande ran a dead heat for the Oaks and Petrarch won the Two Thousand Guineas and the Doncaster St Leger Mr Aristide Baltaizl Is a power In the land having been senior steward of the Jockey Club and having Infre ¬ quently headed the list of successful breeders The stud at Napajedi is an extensive affair consisting of three farms distinct one from the other and covering in all no fewer than fortytwo paddocks The title name belongs to the principal section of the establishment and here Is to be found accom ¬ modations for nearly 200 horses Here It is that the foaling and covering tako place and there Is an Immense riding school which is particularly useful during the winter months The two remaining farms are situated three or four miles away Of these one Is made up of twenty paddocks for the exclusive accommodation of yearlings and weaned foals while the other is for the use of broodmares with foals at foot during the summer and autumn seasons The object of this arrangement in to keep the stallions marcs and younff stock as widely separated as possible and at the same time avoid overstocking the paddocks and so save them from becoming horseslck The yearlings are allowed to lead a natural life and no such process is known as making them np for sale A couple of days prior to tho auction they are taken straightway to the appointed place sold and then returned to thejr paddocks it being the custom to keep theni at tho stud until the autumn when they are sent to their various destinations ready and fit to go through the routine ot breaking and training
