THEY HAVE THEM IN CANADA ALSO A vast number of American citizens make fortunes in the United States and go to Europe to spend them The reason why is not difficult to find A wave of fanaticism has during the past few years spread over the United States and herculean efforts have been made by socalled moral reformers to de ¬ prive those living in the large cities of nearly every pleasure they have been accustomed to enjoy In Europe those in authority take the very opposite course They spend money lavishly to provide amusement and entertainment for visitors Hence tli reason that London Paris Vienna Berlin and other continental cities are crowded with rich Amer ¬ icans who prefer living in a community where moral sneaks are not continually spying on their actions Toronto harbors some fanatics who are generally doing their utmost to make this city u place not wortli living in inThey They would close the gates of Woodbine Park and banish every thoroughbred from the country If they could work their will It may sound rather strange to make the statement but nevertheless it is true that some church officials have been responsible in the past for inculcating a desire to gamble in youthful minds which no doubt in latter years showed itself in a wish to back the ponies Socalled church socials used every form of gambling device to swell the church funds Lottery tickets were sold fishing in unseen pools for prizes and wheels of fortune played a prominent part Even the dreaded dice were not unknown in the basements of some churches Many a youthful mind was cor ¬ rupted through the persuasive influence of pillars of the church and ladies of the congregation who were out for the dollars regardless of consequences It would be well If more clergymen visited the meetings of the Ontario Jockey Club They would there find thousands of people enjoying themselves with less objectionable features than show them ¬ selves at the average camp meeting Let them go to the races and gain wisdom through personal ob ¬ servation Canadian Sportsman
