DEATH OF ENGLANDS GREATEST SIRE St Simon Unbeaten Son of Galopin and St An ¬ gela Closes His Honorable Career CareerLondon London England April 2 St Simon the Duke of Portlands twentysevnyearold champion of champion sires and undefeated face horse died tills morning St Simon was bought at the New ¬ market sales July it 1SS for the Duke of Portland by trainer Matt Dawson on the advice of jockey Fred Archer for rOO guineas St Simon was bred in 1SS1 by Prince Gatthyany who neglected to outer the colt in either the Derby or St Leger The colt made his first start in the colors of the Duke of Portland at the Goodwood course as a two yearold July 31 ISS in the Halnaker Stakes of live furlongs defeating Richelieu by six lengths and the following day won a purse race over the same course In his third start he won the Devonshire Nursery Plate Handicap and followed that with the Prince of Wales Nursery Plate His last race as a twoyearold was a match be ¬ tween him and the Duke of Westminsters Duke of Richmond which he won by threefourths of a length poundsThe each carrying 121 pounds The following year St Simon closed his unbeaten career on the turf by winning four cup races the first of which the Epsom Gold Cup was a walk ¬ over lie then won the Ascot Gold Cup and the Newcastle Gold Cup and his last race was for the Goodwood Cup which lie won from the Duke of Hamiltons entry Ossian and Friday finishing twenty lengths in front of the former formerSt St Simon did not race as a fouryearold and did not go Into the stud until a fiveyearold and his first foals fifteen in number appeared in 1S87 At the close of the English racing season Novem ¬ ber 2 last St Simon had 42 living foals consist ¬ ing of 220 colts and 205 fillies 30 of which had appeared under colors and 17S had won races earn ¬ ing 2030090 Last year he finished in twenty fifth place among the winning sires of the year St Simons greatest moneywinners were La Fleche 170015 Persimmon 17r0 St Frusquin 104 500 Diamond Jubilee 145925 Signorina 114505 Memoir 85500 Semolina 02900 Amiable 52 410 Darley Dale 52050 and Rabelais 50220 50220In In stud fees St Simon earned In twenty years over 1250000 besides his services with the matrons of Welbeck Stud StudHe He was tlu sire of many winners of Englands great races Of them to win the St Leger were Diamond Jubilee Persimmon Memoir and La Fleche In the list of winners of the Epsom Derby appear Diamond Jubilee and Persimmon St Frusquln won the Two Thousand Guineas and Semolina La Fleche Amiable and Wlnifreda won the One Thousand Guin ¬ eas His representatives to win the Epsom Oaks were La Roche Amiable La Fleche Memoir and Mrs Butterwick ButterwickMany Many of his colts after their retirement from the turf have luen great successes in the stud The most notable of these are Desmond which finished third to Gallinulc and Ormc In the list of winning sires last year In England St Frusquln next In fourth place and not far below Diamond Jubilee Persimmon Florjzd II Collar Bill of Portland St Serf Raeburn Perlgord and Tarporley An ¬ other Pletermarltsburg which died shortly after the first of the year was sold for stud duty abroad bringing 75000 and was also the sire of many winners In England St Simons best son as a sire is St Frusquln which In eight crops of foals has 210 winners earning an aggregate of 005380
