CRACK COLTS IN A DUEL ONLY CHAPULTEPEC AND RESTIGOUCHE CON ¬ TEST THE STERLING STAKES1 James B Brady Improves Quickly anil Wins After AfterHeavy Heavy Backing Royal Captive Defeats Arion Arionette ette Keenes Mystify Takes a Purse New York April 21 Although the Sterling Stakes the feature of todays racing at Aqueduct was reduced by withdrawals to a match between Chapultepec and Restigouche it turned out to be a sensational affair in all of its phases To begin with the bettors could not make a choice between the two and they were practically at the same price through ¬ out the betting each closing at 9 to 10 Both were on thiir bad behavior at the post although in this respect Chapultepec was easily the winner as he is the worst post performer seen in these parts in many moons The race then wound up with a claim of foul against Chapultepec which many be ¬ lieved should have been allowed but the stewards said no evidently basing their decision on the ground that Restigouche was beaten when the bump ¬ ing occurred and that the best interests of the sport would not be conserved by setting back the best horse horseKestigouclie Kestigouclie was the pacemaker from the start and opened up quite a gap after a half mile had been run The early pace was fairly fast and at sis furlongs Restigouche appeared to have the rape won But Chapultepec began to overhaul him in the stretch while Restigouche failing to show the courage he displayed in the Freeport was tiring at the furlong post Just after passing this point and when Chapultepec was on even terms the latter swerved toward the rail bumping Restigouche severely Chapultepec then came on to win by a length and a half Notler claimed foul but the stewards refused to disturb the placing of the horses The fact that Restigouche was tiring ad bearing out slightly probably affected the decision which was popular with the majority although there were many to speak of the Inconsistency of the rul ¬ ing But neither Chapultcpec nor Restigouche added to their fame by the running of the Sterling Stakes Restigouche may not have fully recovered from the lambasting he received In the Freeport but his performance was in no wise so impressive as on that occasion Chapultepec Is such a bad actor at the post as to make him uncertain at all times timesThe The tabulated history of the Sterling Stakes Is as follows Year Winner A Wt Jockey Val Time Time100G 100G Roseben 3 127 Lyne 19SO 140J 1907 Not run this year year190S 190S Chapultepec 3 107 R McDanl lSSO 1391 1391The The card today was an improvement over any yet offered and the promise of good sport was reflected by the attendance which was very large Notwith ¬ standing it was quite cold with a strong wind blow ¬ ing from the bay bayThe The handicap at sis furlongs turned out a good thing for James B Brady which was possibly the best backed horse of the meeting From 3 to 1 the Farrell colt was backed to even money He had all the way to win easily without his chances having been seriously menaced at any time Hyperion II ran a smashing race under his impost of 120 pounds poundsThe The Newcastle Stable sprung another good thing in Royal Captive which stood a drive gamely to win from the favorite Arionette ArionetteMystify Mystify won the closing race for James R Keene but is not likely to become one of the seasons dis ¬ tinguished bearers of the white blue spots Only two decided choices won Speculation was lively but of small volume volumeWhen When asked to put a price on Jubilee today Fred Llttlefield named 12000 as the figure that would Induce him to part with the son of Comupte There was no sale The performances of Chapultepec and Restigouche today prompted many good judges to say that Jubilee is a better horse than either one of them But jockey Shaw who has ridden Jubilee in his races this year does not think so He rates Jubilee as only a shade above selling plater class He might have beaten them today for this was a bad race said Shaw but singlehanded I do not think Jubilee can beat either of the others othersEd Ed Peters received a telegram from Judge Hamil ¬ ton today informing him that jockey Charley Grand who was suspended at Los Angeles last winter has been reinstated Grand will probably ride on the northern circuit circuitSecretary Secretary W P Frazer was at Aqueduct today In the Interests of the Ontario Jockey Clubs stakes which close tomorrow
