RACING PROTECTED BY AN INJUNCTION Louisville Officials Forbidden to Interfere Pending a Hearing Kentucky Derby Gossip Louisville Ky May 4 When Judge Samuel B Kirby of the Chancery Court late this afternoon granted a temporary restraining order against James F Grinstead mayor of Louisville W M Bullitt BullittE E B Green and H I James constituting the Board of Public Safety of the city of Louisville J II Haager chief of police of the city of Louisville and Charles L Scholl sheriff of Jefferson county Kentucky from interfering with or molesting in any way whatever with the operation of the race meeting beginning May 5 it marked the first victory for the race track managers in an effort to conserve their rights from attempted interference on the part of the city officials The reason for the jockey clubs application for relief in the courts from threatened interference with their meeting was brought about by Mayor Grinsteads letter to Charles CharlesF F Grainger made public last night in which the mayor announced his intention of sending out a force of police to Churchill Downs on Derby day to stop any form of betting whether it be by Pnrlmutuel or auction pools The announcement came as a sur ¬ prise to the race track officials who under their charter grant felt certain that they would be free from molestation as the charter specifically allows Parlmutuels and auction pools to be sold at the course during the progress of a race meeting meetingIt It is confidently expected Unit when the injunc ¬ tion comes up for a hearing May It it will be made permanent Meanwhile it is thought that the offi ¬ cials enjoined will not attempt to dissolve it until the time set for its bearing allowing live days of racing free from interference interferenceIt It is not expected that many persons will remain away from the track on account of the threatened Interference and the management Is making prepar ¬ ations to take care of an immense attendance This years Derby may not have as brilliant a field as have contested in former years but one thing Is certain if the enthusiasm displayed on the streets and principal hostclries tonight Is to be taken as a criterion then the sentiment the running of the oldest fixture In the west evokes has not abated a bit and the winner will be given all equally rousing reception as met his predecessors predecessorsThe The bad condition of the track and prospects that more rain will fall tonight makes It almost certain that not over eight starters will go in the big race The ones most likely to contest and their jockeys as announced tonight arc arcHorse Horse Jockey Horse Jockey Banridge JockeyBanridge E Martin Dr Mathews T Taylor Dunvegan TaylorDunvegan J Lee Milford Minder MinderBHLHerrou BHLHerrou C ICoernerStone Street Pickens PickensSir Sir Cleges V PowcrsGllvedeur Jos Hogg HoggBalbus Balbus is coupled with Sir Cleges as the Long entry but his trainer announced tonight that unless the track improves considerably the colt will not start Dunvegan Is owned by J N Camden Jr and Bill Herron by Barney Dreyfus the PIttsburg baseball magnate Both these colts are trained by W J Young wno makes no secret of his belief in being able to successfully land the rich prize with one of his charges Tonight Sir Cleges Is en ¬ joying favoritism with Milford a close second choice No rider has been announced for Bill Her ¬ ron but It is thought that in the invent O Koerner reaches here in time from Baltimore and Balbus Is not a starter he will pilot the Dreyfus candi ¬ date There will be one departure from a regulation of the Lexington meeting In taat newaptper reports will not have to be delayed twenty minutes after each race raceEdward Edward Jasper who officiated as secretary at Worth and Los Angeles Is now serving here as assistant to Lymaii Davis
