HORSES TEETH INDEX OF CHARACTER How Dainty Damo Won a Race Through a Den ¬ tists Advice Lexington Ky May 3 My choice of all the mares in training here is Dainty Dame said Dr J E Phelps the veterinary dentist a night or two ago She Is fast highly organized but not of a nervous disposition Is game to the core and has more sense than a good many people that 1 know She is an ideal racer particularly for the western part of the country 1 dressed her teeth last Tuesday and when I had finished Mr Fergu ¬ son happened along When he saw her month he expressed some doubt about starting her the next day I told him that he would make a mistake in keeping her in the barn that he could bet on her with all confidence that he would cash his ticket nnd lie did So did I The public and a great many horsemen for that matter are not acquainted with the fact that a graduated veterinary dentist of long practice seldom makes a mistake in sizing up the qualities of a racer There is no better way in the world to judge the character and or ¬ ganism of a horse than by working in his mouth If he has no heart no courage no sense he will shrink from the forceps and the rasp the very sight of dental tools will put him aquiver If he Is courageous and game he will go up against the Instruments standing quietly and firmly and giving you all possible aid displaying admirable deter ¬ mination born of good sense and stouthearteducss Dainty Dame is such a thoroughbred and Id like much to own her were I racing a stable of horses horsesThere There is a twoyearold chestnut colt in the stable of Dan T Morris which barring sickness or accident will make a good race horse Ho Is by Alloway out of Despenla and his name is Des potoway He Is a wellformed colt of more than average size and has speed and sense Nothing seems to Iwther or fret him The first time he was schooled at the barrier he walked up to the tape as if he had seen it a thousand times before nibbed ills nose along it a time or two and then stood quietly while half a dozen other youngsters were cavorting around him When tlie barrier was finally released he was away first with a jump from a stand and at once into a long sweeping stride Mr Morris is going slowly with him and may not start him until the Latonia meeting Despotoway is a half brother to Handrail Des ¬ perado Destroy and Kassala all winners and to Favorine the dam of Frank Bill Through Des pcniu this colt belongs to the famous Morgan fam ¬ ily from which have come winners by the score scoreGeorge George W Wilder Sherwood Farm in Wood ford county owns probably the best looking yearling by Orlando in Kentucky At any rate Charley Hughes Woodford Clay and others say ho stands out above any they have seen by that sire He is a bay colt out of Topsy Over daughter of Top Gallant and Princess Over He was bred in part ¬ nership by George Wilder and his brother William and last week George bought his brothers interest He says the youngster will not be sent to the sales but he Intends to race him himThe The jockey find of the meeting which closed here Saturday was Walter Franklin a nineteenyearold lad whose parents reside in Maysville and who is under contract to T C McDowell He has been exercising horses for over two years and never had a mount in a race until he weighed out for Lady Anne in the third number on the card last Tuesday lie rode her home a good second and in the fifth race that day he won on Anderson his second mount He rode two winners one second one third and three unplaced during the meeting He is alert at the post uses good judgment in saving ground and placing his horses has not displayed overanxiety and is a strong finisher He rides with very short stirrups and balances himself well over the horses withers withersOn On the farms there is much to occupy tlie time and attention of the breeders at this season Be ¬ sides the foaling and mating the yearlings are being prepared for the sales which will open at Slieeps liead Bay in June Considerably over GOO head will be sent east from Kentucky during June and July and the number to be catalogued for the September sales will bring the total beyond 1000 It would be a task to locate a breeder who doesnt think he has a better lot this year than last and nil who have them are laying stress on the good points of sisters and brothers to distinguished race horses They are all too doubtful as to the market and the majority are not expecting such prices as they re ¬ ceived when there was more of certainty about the situation in the east The decision of Harry Stanhope to take Marechal Nell and her yearling by Watercress to the English market is generally regarded as a wise move Good gnessers at year ¬ ling values say that he should have at least 10000 for the Watercress colt and they figure that the dam a full sister to Rhoda B Orbys dam will bring 5000 5000R R L Baker was fortunate in having a 5000 insurance policy on R C Rann He bought the colt for 3500 at the J S Stoll closing out sale here last November Counting the cost of the horse his shipping and training expenses since last November and tlie forfeits to pay on stake engage ¬ ments there will be little left for profit out of the insurance policy policyThe The story that Sir Navarre the threeyearold halfbrother to Salvidere is pulling a yam wagon at Tampa Florida is romance Sir Navarre on the authority of Scott Hudson who bought the soil of Sir Dixon Sallle of Navarre from Charles Ellison at New Orleans several weeks ago is now in Bel ¬ gium I shipped him to England said Hudson in the lobby of the Phoenix Hotel Thursday night and from there he was sold into Belgium BelgiumE E R Bradley who has been spending a month at his Idle Hour Stock Farm here will leave for New York tomorrow He has decided not to ship Black Mary east and will send her to Pat Dunne at Louisville Clifford Hammond the superintendent of Idle Hour Farm who was injured by a track roller at the farm several weeks ago is able to be about on crutches crutchesW W II Laudeman will leave for New York to ¬ morrow lie expects to remain at the eastern tracks the entire season with the exception of a month to be snent with his family at a summer resort in Michigan MichiganOscar Oscar Bachman the Chicago bookmaker is plan ¬ ning a trip abroad for next winter winterJockey Jockey George Mountain who has not ridden since New Years day at New Orleans was here during all of the meeting and went to Louisville tonight He is hopeful that lie will be able to secure a license In the near future but not witli the notion of riding in this country lie says he intends to go to France served Billy I cant get in do give me a leg up This was done with as much solemnity as if ringingAfter the St Legcr bell had been ringing After he had been tucked in he said In a very confidential tone Sir youve been very good to me today and I wish to make you some return MindTarid placing his fingers against his nose It goes no further Imt Borodino Is a race horse thats the straight tip Goodnight and the next moment pillowsHere his head was buried In the pillows Here is another good story of Billy Plerse Many years ago a very distinguished military officer was one of the stewards of Doncaster races and during his term of office had occasion to decide a dispute against Billy Plerse Towd Mm as Billy was generally called was alwas a cranky old file who would never aTimlt himself In the wrong and he was judgmentWhy very Indignant at the judgment Why he dont know the difference between a horse race and a charge o cavalry he growled to a friend and as to a jostle he dont know the meaning o the word Wasnt his father or grand ¬ father hanged hangedNo No certainly not replied the other but his uncle was shot shotAll All I thort It was soomat o th sowrt an its mooch of a moochness tween hangin an shootln But I tell ee hell niver do for th turf he may be well enough for a general to lead on soldier chaps but hell never do for the turf he wants It here pointing to his forehead he aint got the brains for that Thormanby In London Sportsman
