MORE FAME TO JACK ATKIN TAKES UP PENALTIES AND WINS TIIE RICH METROPOLITAN HANDICAP McCarter Roughly Treated T S Martin Defeats DefeatsJohn John M P in the New York Steeplechase Great Crowd at Bclmont Park Now York May 13 Carrying 128 H unds Jack Atkln Iiarni v Schreibers good son of Sain and Kl Salado won tin rich Metropolitan Handicap at Bel ninnt Park tiNlay running the mile in the remark alily good time of l38j Uestigouche was second und tin outsider Don Creole1 third The Metropolitan was won by the best horse in the world was the message sent to Mr Sclireiber at Oakland l y J P Atkin for whom the horse was named The attach ¬ ment of Mr Atkin for the horse which has home Ills name so valiantly and so steadfastly makes him place an enormous estimate on the colts merits but there were many who saw his performance todav ready to proclaim htm a wonderful horse at one mile and although his weight was beginning to tell at the end lie won easily enough Like many races of this character there was some interference and McCarter the favorite was the one to suffer Tliis In no way detracted from the merit of lack Atkins victory The colt was beautifully ridden by Shilling ShillingThirteen Thirteen of the fifteen named over night went to the post Dandelion and Ilaby Wolf being the ab ¬ sentees McCarter was the public choice and was at an extremely short price all things considered The public evidently believed that too much was asked of Tack Atkht md he was permitted to go liiick from 5 to 1 to S to 1 The heaviest sup ort aside from that for the favorite was for King Cobalt which was backed down three points under the belief that he had learned to stay and it was tignred that his great speed would serve him well Salvidere out for the first time looked well but the long price quoted against him was evidence sufficient that he was not yet at his best bestStarter Starter Casshly was fortunate in getting a perfect sart The horses had rim twenty or thirty yards before they began to string out It was McCarter on the inside that first ran away from the bunch taking a lead of almost a length in the lirst fur ¬ long King Cobalt Kestigoiieho and Jack Atkin were head and head the latter on the outside of the trio ISeforc three furlongs had been run McCarter was seen to falter and drop back This continued until ho was back with the stragglers all hope of winning gone Before the turn for home was reached Shilling called on Jack Atkin ivhich quickly disposed of King Cobalt and Resti gonche and had the race won a quarter of a mile from home lie was not called on for his best effort but was tiring slightly at the linish and it was pretty clearly demonstrated that one mile is his race under heavy imposts Don Creole the outsider which had outworked everything for the race was a had last for half the journey butin the stretch found his epctul and closed up with a great rush which put the tiring Restigouche to a hard drive to placeWhen save second place When McCarter returned to the scales patches of hair and hide were scraped off his side and this ac ¬ counted for his sudden dropping back on the back Ktritcli King Cobalt the horse next to him was held to blame for the crowding which put McCarter to tin fence although many were of the opinion that Shilling on Jack Atkin started the trouble Musgravc who rode McCarter was in reality to blame Inasmuch as lie did not utilize the speed of McCarler and send him into a good lead and clear of trouble troubleA A crowd otflcially estimated at 15000 persons turned out for the Belmout Park opening It was the largest crowd ever at the course except on Saturdays and holidays and not often has it been topped on those days The attendance was made up of people representing the best class of citizens in and about the metropolis A list of names of the prominent persons present would read like pages of tho social register and of whose who are high in the business professional and financial world The gathering was a stinging rebuke to tho reformers and meddlers who for selfish and personal not to say hypocritical reasons would put an end to the sport It was a glorious day and exceedingly warm The warmThe meeting of T S Martin and John M P in the New York Steeplechase was but little less tit nn attraction than the Metropolitan and the honors were all for the Virginiabred horse Skill ¬ fully ridden by Dupee T S Martin made the pace throughout and won as his rider pleased Donohiie on John M P made two or three unsuccessful at ¬ tempts to go to T S Martin but the Inter always had a burst of speed in reserve and quickly galloped away again The surprise of the race was Kemp Ridgeiey which ran a surprisingly good race for his tlrst over so stiff a course as that it Belmont ParJc lieeasily beat John M p for second place and will surely will good races In the east eastThe The tabulated history of the New York Steeple ¬ chase is as follows followsYear Year Winner A Wt Jockey Val Time
