COLOR OF THE EPSOM DERBY WINNERS WINNERSIn In Sir Walter Gilbeys book entitled Horse breeding to Color recently published referring to the reason for the frequency of certain colors and the decrease of others it may be interesting to know that the Derby has been won by thirtyfour chest ¬ nuts twentyfour browns sixtysix bays one bay or brpwn Volodyovski one gray Gustavns iSiil and one black Smolensko 1S13 Flying Dutchman 18W is not included in the list There seems to have been difliculty in defining his color Flying Dutch ¬ man is described as probably the best race horse whose color most nearly approached black Ac ¬ cording to a painting by Herring in Lord Rosu berys possession Flying Dutchman was black but Sir Walter Gilbey says Smolensko is the only black horse that has won the Derby
