ASTORIA STAKES NOMINATORS AND ENTRIES There are just an even dozen sublcribers to the Astoria Stakes to bo run at Gravesend June li The famous dinner stakes which has been one of the most interesting events in eastern racing each season since its inaguration in 1002 From a race of comparative insignificance growing out of the the result of the pleasant bantering of two well known sportsman it lias become one of the most notable twoyearold events on the Gravesend calen ¬ dar darThe The Astoria was originated by Senator P II Mc Carren and Andrew Miller In the winter of 1JOl they became involved in a friendly dispute as to which owned the better twoyearold by Ben Brush Miller was ready to back his filly Wild Thyme while McCarren was equally us enthusiastic over his Credulity A private race to be run in the spring was agreed upou when Philip J Dwyer suggested that it be run publicly at Gravesend for a sum of money lie would add This was agreed to when J G Follansbee who owned a very good Bathamp ton filly Astarita came along and said he would feel agrieved if he was not allowed to compete as well lit was admitted with the others and his filly won easily easilyThis This years nominators are Wood ford Clay II B Duryea P J Dwyer J G Follansbee F R Hitch ¬ cock Frederick Johnson the Newcastle Stable the Oncck Stable Paul J Rainey J E Widener T II Williams and K T Wilson Jr Nine have made two nominations only one of which is to start and the others but one oneT T II Williams president of the Pacific Coast Jockey Club is a new subscriber to the event His Koserale by Kddie Jones Sweet Rose is a Californiabred filly with one race to her credit on the Pacific coast where the offspring of Kddie Tones are seen more often than in the east Hubia Granda his other nomination is by Grcenan The Great Ruby and has two wins one second and one third to her credit creditRoyal Royal Captive named by the Newcastle Stable is by Golden Maxim Mary Stuart lias two races to her credit and is a smart filly Hauonla one of the R T Wilson Jr nominations by Mexican Hanoana is a comely miss which lias done some good work for trainer Healey at Belmont Park The other Wilson nomination is Mauvlette a daugh ¬ ter of Mexican LAlouette winner of the Futurity lii 1S 7 7Blue Blue Ribbon which will carry the Follansbee colors if started is a daughter of Roehampton and the Widener nomination is Wallflower a daughter of Meddler Karma She was purchased at the Mackay sale last fall Her dam was bought at a cost of 5000 as a yearling yearlingPaul Paul 1 Rainey is pinning his faith to Terpsichore a halfsister to Blue Girl This is a daughter of Star Shnotnntl iald to bedofiig 6iue tficellent1 work Fated another daughter of the same sire is the other Rainey nomination The Hitchcock entry if there is one will be Clef by Plaudit Canzonetta This filly raced at Washington without making a very creditable showing showingSenator Senator McCarren one of the men responsible for the stake following the decision of which all the important people concerned in racing in the east will dine at the WaldorfAstoria at the win ¬ ners expense is not represented with a nomination
