FAIR PLAYS GREAT SPEED WINS THE RICH CONEY ISLAND JOCKEY CLUB STAKES IN NEAE RECORD TIME Maddcns Pair of Cracks Run First and Second in intho tho Great Trial Stakes Grand Attendance Attendanceat at Sheepshead Bay New York June 27 The steadily increasing at ¬ tendance of the past week reached its climax today when a crowd of 20000 people equal in numbers to that of Suburban day journeyed to the beautiful Sheepshead Bay race course to witness the greatest threeyearold race of the year the Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes While the absence of Colin and Celt from the dominant feature robbed the at ¬ tractive card of some of its interest it left the big race which was practically intended to be an east ¬ ern renewal of the famous American Derby a fascinatingly open race with almost every horse named to start having a chance The quintette of starters was composed of Fair Llay Hessian King James Dorante and Angelus and they finished in that order The lirst and last named were outsiders lu the betting while the opening quotations saw the other three on an equal mark and they practically monopolized the betting on the race Hessian which had receded to 3J to 1 was well backed at post time Because of the prevailing opinion among racegoers that Itowe had dodged the issue with Colin because of the big weight concessions the champion was called upon to make to Dorante Hessian and King J mes they could not be induced to seriously con ¬ sider the similarly disadvantageously weighted Fair Ilay and were accordingly much chagrined when the unexpected happened and Mr Belmonts colt 12H K nn ls and all made good in a really magnificent effort From a time standpoint and with the weight carried Fair Plays victory was the greatest achieve ¬ ment for a horse of his age in the history of the American turf The time 231 J for the mile and a half over a circular course with four turns was ex ¬ traordinary traordinaryAt At the start Angelus singled out like a rocket and made the running closely attended by Dorante Ilcssiun and King James with Fair Play a bad last the result oC an unready start They swept around the first turn in this order There was a shifting of positions in the rear division while go ing up the backstrelch Fair Play improving his own on the Inside until he ran lapped on the oilier two All were within easy striking distance of the leaders Suddenly Jind prematurely the favorite drew out with full live furlongs of the journey yet to go The rear trio were after him in a twinkling and Angelus was almost instantly surrounded and eliminated as a contender Shortly afterwards and beginning the last quarter of the long journey Dorante was swallowed up and it was a distinct shock to the spectators to find him in the ruck from which there seemed no possibility of extrac ¬ tion until It was loo late All three of the trailers had wrested the lead from him and thrown him off his stride and into the discard in so doing A little farther on the ultimate winner had established a safe lead seeming certain of victory and although llesslun loomed up In menacing fashion when near ing the finish Fair Play held his own and won with something to pare from si horse that might have beaten him but for an insiilticicnt and somewhat hurried preparation the result of disabilities of recent origin King James ran a game race but the big weight told heavily on him a small horse in comparison opponentsBesides with his gigantic opponents Besides the big threeyearold race and three fine overnight races the card contained two other im ¬ portant stakes one of great magnitude in the Great Trial for twoyearolds and the Beacon for slcepie chasers over the full course Both were illustra ¬ tive of the very highest standard of thoroughbred sport the juvenile contest in particular developing fcovoral sensational features In the paddock before its running John K Madden had been offered 40000 for his grand twoyearold Fayctle by Paul J Ilainey and had refused refusedIn In the race Fayctte was beaten by his stable com ¬ panion Sir Martin the second string of the great pair and which Madden is alleged to have said he would sell for 10000 Luckily for Madden Hel ¬ mets still very evident greenness and inexperience in racing saved a probable defeat for both of liis colts for although they lx th finished ahead of Heines big and awkward youngster neither of thetn had anything to spare The occasion was too Important for Madden to miss and he rose out of a sickbed to be present The presentThe Hitchcock colors for a second time were in front in an important steeplechase at this meeting California King winning the valuable Beacon stee ¬ plechase over the full course with distinguished opposition including John M P Thistledale T S submit to a lot of banter about tljeir distinguished charges and alleged cripples Colin and Celt They took the chafling good na turedly It is generally understood that there is really nothing important the matter with either of them Mr Keene was probably glad after the Fair PJay victory that he had kept them particularly Colin in the barn Colin is such a valuable piece of horseflesh that excessive caution is exercised in his case no chances being taken whatever of risk ¬ ing a single defeat defeatThe The stewards of the Jockey Club held a meeting last night at which the present racing situation was discussed in detail A number of applications for licenses were also considered consideredB B J Callahan a member of the Mcts was ar ¬ rested at the track today for an alleged violation
