BALLOTS EXCEEDING SPEED WINS THE RICH ADVANCE STAKES IN A CAN ¬ TER AND SETS A RECORD Mclisando First in the Vernal Stakes Keenes Es ¬ timate of Colins Speed Sir Huon Falls Lame Again New York July 1 Ballot the Suburban hero hung up a new American record in the Advance Slakes at Sheepshead Bay today running the In ¬ frequently used distance of one mile and fivesix teenths in 209S with 125 pounds up and defeating at weightforage a trio of crack threeyearolds in Hessian King James and Dorante besides Frank ill and other turf stars of his own age When the victor returned to the scales simultaneously with n display of the official time he was greeted by the spectators with the wildest enthusiasm The four yearolds victory was of such tremendous propor ¬ tions as to compel admiration Its manner of ac ¬ complishment involved sensational pacemaking the mill following the first sixteenth of the start to the quarter post in the stretch being covered in 17 Mat In the race Ballot held sway throughout by n wide gap of daylight King James jeopardized his chances for second place by his strenuous efforts in keeping in nearest and unavailing pursuit of the leader being finally beaten by his gigantic opponent Hessian which got up for second honors in the very last stride of a hot finish Frank Gill finished a lieatenolf fourth with Dorante which was in dltticultlfs very early in the race an inglorious last As Hessians King James and Dorantes races wore a part of their preparation for the Commonwealth on Saturday their performances to ¬ day had special significance The net results of the public trial show that Dorante has trained off and lie has no business with the other two which are very nearly on a par The start of the Ad ¬ vance was out of and at the limit of the now chute this combination of the course being kite shaped with two big turns turnsThe The Vernal Stakes for twoyearold fillies which had just preceded the big feature was marked by another onesided victory for the Keene colors the tleet Melisandff disposing of her opposition with the same ease as her older and more famous stable companion companionJnmes Jnmes R Keene the owner of this glorious pair of thoroughbreds was very jubilant over his double success He said after the Advance was decided that the tracks of the present are too hard that safety was being sacrificed for speed and that one could find a very hard bottom in almost any place w the course by prodding through a couple of inches of top soil with a cane and that these conditions are responsible for the recent soreness developed by Colin and for the quartercrack and bruised foot iifillction of Celt These two are the most con ¬ spicuous victims of the presentday craze for rec ¬ ords English grass courses arc far easier on horses with big weights up than are our own dirt tracks It has been demonstrated time and again that horses oan carry bigger weights with less chances of break ¬ ing down on grass tracks than they can on the regu ¬ lation dirt tracks in this country There is a lot of talk going on about the relative speed of Ballot jind Colin and of this Mr Keene said saidWell Well Ill tell you what I think about it Colin can beat Ballot at even weights from one stride to ten miles You said Ballot ran a mile easily timed separately in 137 in todays race Colin could have taken him by the head at any part of the journey without extending himself Thats what I think of the relative merits of the two twoAssistant Assistant Secretary Earlocher of the Saratoga As ¬ sociation said today that there was a possibility that the elevendays meeting decided on at the famous Spa in August may be continued to the limit A big reduction in railway rates has been promised by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad from Albany and adjacent towns for the opening lay and Saturdays during the meeting meetingIarkview Iarkview the fast Hamburg filly belonging to Dr Mathews has broken down From a seemingly iiuthoritative source comes the information that J A Murphy will not b reappointed to fill the position of steward at the coming Kiapire City Club meeting at Yonkers On the same authority J J Burke is selected to act as presiding judge or steward instead insteadDespite Despite threats of showers during the noon hours the attendance today was extraordinarily large and llie card warranted the big turnout of racegoers All the conditions were ideal for fast time and a firstclass lays sport was the result It was a favorites day with a vengeance the only excep ¬ tion being Besom in the opening race The Xew rastle Stables threeyearold Big Chief which Iosely approaches high class smashed a track rec ¬ ord in winning the second race of a mile and an eighth in l51i from four others including Ques ¬ tion Mark whose forward running evoked much favorable comment As usual the spectacular was much In evidence in the closing race which en ¬ gaged a big field of juveniles juvenilesJockey Jockey Dugan climaxed a great afternoons saddle work by driving Watervliet the last winning favor ¬ ite home in front As a matter of fact Dugan and Xotter monopolized the riding honors between them oaeli haying three wins to his credit creditThere There were four arrests made today for alleged violation of the antibetting laws Three took place in the field They were Louis Winters Jerry Lock bnrt and William Duke and the other Sam Frank In the big Inclosurc InclosurcA A foul was claimed against Sea Wolf the winner of the fifth race which was not allowed allowedA A man by the name of Farrell was taken into custody and searched when leaving the track after the lirst race A lot of racing memoranda of starters scratches etc were found on him and confiscated HP was let go goMax Max Silvers who represents the Lima
