UTTEB FUTILITY OF BETTING LAWS LAWSThere There are some men who will bet and who will drink and the only hope for reformation is the change in public opinion such as lias been going on in England for the last half century There is nothing more calculated to drive the ordinary moder ¬ ate man to bet and to drink than an act of parlia ¬ ment or congress telling him that he shall not do so He feels that such laws are an infringement of his personal liberty and that the autiererything fanatics hare no right to dictate to him what he shall or shall not do The new tyranny is far worse than the old for it was said of the old tyranuy that it was tempered by assassination whereas there is no remedy against a majority of fanatics in a popularly elected house The making of martyrs never did a cause any good London Globe
