HOW MR VANDERBILT GOT NORTHEAST Grand Prix de Paris Winners Dam Not a Brilliant Performer by Any Means Through the victory of Northeast another page might be added to the romance of the turf His sire Perth by War Dance was bred by M Maurice Ephrussi at the Gazon Stud and owing to his breeder having temporarily withdrawn his colors from the turf he was sent to the yearling sales at Deauville where M Caillault bought him for 5500 on the judgment of his trainer R Carter Jr to win him his first Derby and Grand Prix de Paris His dam was bred by M Camille Blanc at the Joyenval Stud which was founded when that gen ¬ tleman took over by private purchase the old Lonray Stud founded by the Messrs Donon and their rela ¬ tive tf Staub who ran their horses in his name nameM M Donon when fortune seemed inclined to shine on his stable was induced to withdraw from racing through one of those crises which sweep over the financial and commercial communities from time to time He sold the contents of his stud to M Camille Blanc whose multifarious occupations have more than once compelled him to curb his devotions to all mutters connected with the turf The old race course at St Louis Ie Polssy abandoned to its fate with the stands stabling and other parapher nalla became the property of J Hennessy who in ¬ vested his winnings over Entrainenr the Successful horse in the Grand Prize of Monaco and In the Grand Prize purchaseAt of Xice in 1SS5 in its purchase At the death of Mr Hennessy the place was sold to M Camille Blanc Shortly afterward in provis ¬ ion of the arrival of the mares and horses belonging to W K Vanderbllt from America and the transfer of his racing quarters to this side of the Atlantic a rumor that M Blanc was on the point of with ¬ drawing his colors led to an offer being made It was finally accepted and a number of horses wen changed from the ownership of Camille Blanc to that of W K Vanderbilt Xordenfield was not a brilliant performer notwithstanding her excellent pedigree and she had not proved such an extra success at the stud until M Rutgers Le Roy se ¬ lected her for a visit to Perth althpugh their re ¬ spective origins showed the blood of Xewmlnster Stockwell and Macaroni The result has proved satisfactory notwithstanding the inbreeding
