THE MINKS DEFEATS CZAE RUNS A FAST RACE IN PREPARATION FOR DECORATION HANDICAP NEXT SATURDAY Jeff Bernstein and Olamtala Win the Races for Two TwoYearOlds YearOlds in Impressive Fashion E M Fry in a Canter Cincinnati O July 2 A fairly good card served only to attract an average attendance at Latonta this afternoon No great enthusiasm was manifested over the linishes in any of the races except the closing one when Lady Bsther a pronounced choice was momentarily threatened with defeat by Water Lake Defeats of some of the best supported choices were incidents of the day An announcement that Judge Blschoff of the Supreme Court of the State of New York hull declared that verbal betting constituted nq crime was greeted with vociferous applause applauseTodays Todays feature a handicap at a mile and ai sixteenth and which also served as a tryout for the Decoration Handicap to be run next Saturday resulted iu a handy victory for The Minks Tun Prewitt representative shouldered top weight but was in close contention with the early pacemakers and came away In the stretch to win without great trouble Czar and Lady Martha were the preferred ones and they raced together for threequarters where Lady Martha was shutUed back and Czar took the lead only to be immediately challenged by Qnagga After The Minks had passed them they still continued as a team to the finish Czar gaining second place by a nose noseMIrzer MIrzer and Ordono absorbed nearly all the support in the following race at one mile but were never serious contenders MIrzer under better riding would have been dangerous but Ordono seemingly had no mishaps and was a distant trailer through out Skyo made a show of her opponents and led throughout Geneva S taking second place from Lady Almy AlmyOlambala Olambala and Jefl Bernstein were returned win ¬ ners In the races for twoyearolds Both showed good promise to develop into above the ordinary class Olambala is owned by J G Greener 17110 developed Oiseau lie appeared a forlorn hope during the first quarter but came with a tremend ous rusji through the stretch that enabled him to wlu by timeJeff a good margin in track record time Jeff Bernstein never put his supporters on the anxious seat as he dashed into a good lead soon after the start and always held Plume his nearest contender safe The poor showing of Uncle Walter which had beaten Crystal Maid and others rather handily in his last start was sharply criticised E M Fry which suffered a disqualification after finishing first iu his previous start outclassed hla opponents in the third race and won as bis rider pleased He was entered for 400 but no one manifested any inclination to bid him up although it is doubtful if he could be purchased for 2000 Entering horses for a fifth of their values Is be ¬ coming quite fashionable in these parts as it 13 at all other race tracks in the country
