JIMMY LANE GETS A WELLEARNED HfESI New York July 20 When Jimmy Lane won the steeplechase so easily at Brighton Beach last Satur ¬ day from Economy and Oro it marked the fifth successive victory for the eightyearold son of His Grace and Anna Page He has by long odds been the star of tho Brighton steeplechase division and his consistency considering his years and his hard campaign is remarkable Jimmy remarkableJimmy Lane has started ten times this season and the only time he did not finish inside the money was at Gravesend when he was knocked down He won six of his races was second1 twice and third once Gwyn Tompkins started him the first day of the Aqueduct meeting and he finished second U Percentage the J W Colt jumper Five days later at the same track he won In his next he raced third and then came the race at Gravesnnd In which he was thrown down by being bumned nt a fence His next race saw him second ami sinco that running he has won five races in a row Tompkins rowTompkins has asked a great deal of his good old horse but he has thrived under the drilling and looks as well now as he did when he went to tho post for his first race of the season In somo of his races the big chestnut has bled but It would seem that this infirmity lias been conquered for of late there lias been no suspicion of the affliction In fact he bled in at least one of his winning races but it was one of the early ones of the season Tomorrow Jimmy iMne with the others of the Tompkins string will be shipped to Montreal for the fall meeting at the Blue Bonnets track Another trackAnother feature of the stecnlechasing at Brighton was the remarkable success of jockey W McKinnev There have been fourteen crosscountry races thug far at the Brighton course this season and he has piloted no fewer than nine of the winners Nino winners is a record that would be well worth while for a whole season of steeplechasing much less than a meeting that Is only seventeen days old
