NEW ORLEANS WINTER RACING PLANS PLANSBiff Biff Tracks to Run Seventy Days Suburban Merry GoRound to Open Next Sunday New Orleans La August S The principal own ¬ ers of the two big race tracks here are figuring on a scheme to operate a thirtyfiveday meeting at each track beginning January 1 and continuing for seventy days each track alternating as in the past pastCongressman Congressman Rhinock of Kentucky who is largely interested in the City Park track was recently consulted about the matter and now the plans are in tentative shape It is proposed to cut down the purses do away with the large stakes and ask the merchants and hotel keepers who derive the principal benefit from the race meetings to con ¬ tribute to the nurse fund It is said that the re ¬ sponse encouragingNo has been encouraging No attempt will be made to either test the new antibookmaking law or violate it in any way It is believed that a fairly good class of horses can be attracted here and that a meeting can be successfully conducted though on a smaller plan than allowedWhile with betting allowed While these plans are being made for the big tracks the merrygorounds which helped to bring about the adverse legislation are going to begin racing at once It is announced that Sunday Au ¬ gust 15 the Suburban track in Jefferson Parish across the river will begin to race and continue each Saturday and Sunday with oral betting until October 1 The horses are to be supplied by a new organization known as the Owners Benevolent and Racing Association with a membership of 200 J W Hill is the secretary of the new organization A Rouprich will manage the meeting Of it Sec ¬ retary Hill says In the Picayune We just want to see if the people of New Orleans love clean rac ¬ ing or not and are willing to risk losing money on this short meeting in the hope that we can make expenses If the people care for the sport without the gambling adjunct we will begin running dally after October 1 If we find ourselves losing steadily we will know there is no chance without having lost too much muchPurses Purses will be 100 the races being condition and handicap affairs no selling races being on a program While a few owners have left New Or ¬ leans taking their strings and jockeys the majority of the halfmile runners are still among us and some jockeysThere fair jockeys There are a number of owners and jockeys who will be barred from the meeting and Mr Rouprich has given us to understand that if the slightest suspicion of crookedness on the part of the jockevs or trainers or owners can be proven off hell go in a hurry Owners here realize that they will have to 1m on their best behavior Feed bills have been making them cough all summer long and they are pining for some means to make a living so that everything is to be conducted open and above board boardTheformation Theformation of the association took place quietly and was only announced last Wednesday The list of members includes a large number of wellknown people besides the horsey element
