resentatives of the best that this country affords n the way of social political and business worth intent on witnessing the running off of a splendid card of six races which included the greatest sport ng event of the American turf the Saratoga Special or twoyearolds Sir Martin won by a neck from Wedding Bells and Mediant in a thrilling and spec tacular finish Owing to fetlock deep mud the going was unusually diflicnlt and slow Only sis candi ¬ dates the smallest field in the history of the race were sent out to battle for the rich prize prizeJohn John B Madden was represented by his allcon ¬ quering colts Sir iMartin and Fayette James K Keene by the fleet Jlllies Wedding Bells and Melis nnde Herman 15 Dnryea by the superbly breil Mediant and Frederick A Forsythe by the sensa ¬ tionally tried Oddfellow colt High Private Plung ¬ ing heavy and spectacular centered on the Madden entry at 4 to 0 the others being accorded only mild and intermittent support The race developed Into one of the most remarkable as well as sensational of struggles The favorites failed to get away well and for half of the journey held forth seemingly anchored in the rear but when commencing the last three furlongs Sir Martin on the Inside began to move up with such swiftness that it carried him alongside the flying pacemaker in less than n fur ¬ long of the stretch Mediant which had held easy
