AN AUSTRALIAN SPORTSMANS DEATH. The death is announced of Mr. James J. Macken. an Australian breeder and owner of race horses, which occurred in Sydney. He had been under treatment in a private hospital for an internal complaint, and never entirely rallied from an operation. Mr. Macken was a native of Ireland and arrived in Sydney about twenty-five years ago. Imbued with the sporting instincts of his native land. Mr. Macken soon became identified with horse racing, and was a member of the Australian Jockey Club. Tatter-sails Club and the New South Wales Breeders. Owners and Trainers Association, being vice-president of the last-named body. He owned a number of race horses. Including Australian Colors. Tartan. Ltieiana. Clonsilla. Ban Ceontha. Achillean and Figiitaway. Australian Colors carried Mr. Mackcns popular livery to victory in Australia and England, but undoubtedly the best horse he owned was Tartan, which credited his owner with the Australian Cup of 1906. the C. B. Fisher Plate. Loch Plate. Champion Stakes, Cumberland Stakes and the A. J. C. Plate. Mr. Maekens career on the turf was that of a clean, honorable sportsman.
