ASSURANCE OF GREAT RACING. California Jockey Club Stakes Fill Grandly and with Many Great Racers Nominated. The seventeen stakes of the California Jockey Club, which closed for entries October 20, received u total of 1,192 nominations. Last year the total for the same events was 1.30S. The falling off of 110 is due to the rejection of many nominations from undesirable owners and to the further fact that so many crack racers from the east were certain to be entered as to deter owners of poor horses from nominating. The gain in quality is so great as to more than compensate for lesser numbers entered. It is to be noted that the falling off was chiefly in the stakes that are to be decided prior to January 1. 1909. only one of these, the Pacific-Union Handicap, showing a gain, while all of the others lost. The Opening Handicap, which was run last Saturday, had but twenty-six nominations as against fifty-four last year. The obvious inference is the cracks arc to bo reserved for the richer stakes offered and to be decided in the early months of next year. The nominations show that all that has been predicted concerning the higher-class horses to take part in Oakland racing comes true. Such stars as Plnkola. Gowan. Lawrence P. Dalev. Johnnie Blake. Rapid Water. Peter Quince, Red Leaf, Frank Flitt-ner, Torbelllno. Downpatrick. Firestone. Big Chief, Friend Harry. Smiley Corbett. Missouri Lad. Glorio, Early Tide. Listowel. Uncle. Meelick. Woodcraft. Veil. Joe Madden. Old Timer, Fern L.. Jack Atkin and Stanley Fay have been freely nominated and it is quite evident that San Francisco is to be treated to racing fully up to the New York standard.
