NOTES OF THE TURF. Fred Cooks good handicap horse. Lawrence P. Daley, was gelded one day last week and will be fired within a short time. Jockey Pickens is riding in great form at the San Antonio meeting, and his work in the saddle last Saturday was easily the feature of the days racing. A large delegation of eastern racing men left New York Saturday for Savannah. Ga.. to be on hand for the opening of the meeting there on Christmas day. Charlie Sanfords useful three-year-old, nigh Gun, probably will not be seen at the races for a long time. One of the colts feet is in poor shape, a bad quarter crack having developed. Jockey Andy Minder, whose leg was broken in a fall at Fort Erie last summer, is slowly recovering from the effects of this accident and hopes to be able to resume riding next spring. Trainer Read has purchased County Clerk from J. M. Crane for R. L. Thomas. Crane took the hors- out of a selling race and received a bonus on the SOO that the animal stood him. F. A. Forsythes good colt, nigh Private, is going a , nicr more and shows no effects of the lame-it .. which attended his last start. His trouble s of the nervicular type and is chronic. Martin Natlianson, the efficient handicapper of the California Jockey Club, has been in ill-health for a week or more, but It is hoped that his present trouble will prove nothing more serious thau a temporary Indisposition. An American candidate for the English Derby that is here is Mr. J. R. Keenes Wamba. a maiden two-year-old by Ben Brush, out of Cap and Bells II., winner of the Oaks in Volodyovskis year. Mr. Keenes American trainer. Rowe. has a high opinion of Wamba. and has wagered a new hat that he beats Sir Martin, both to run. London Sportsman. The system of giving premiums or bonuses to the breeders of winners prevails in Germany, and Messrs. Weinberg, who head the list this year, have received in this way the sum of ,200; M. C. de Lang-Puchhof comes next with ,905, and other breeders who have received bonuses are Dr. J. de Bleichroedcr. ,800; M. P. Pakheiser, ,750, and Baron dOppenhelm ,5G0. In all, the sum of 2,300 has been distributed.
