NOTTER RIDES AT OAKLAND. GIVES EVIDENCE OF HIS SKILL IN THE SADDLE AND IS WELL CHEERED. Light Wool Takes the Feature Race of the Day Fanatic Wins and Makes a I" Good Impression, f San Francisco. Cal.. December 24. .Too Notter was tint chief attraction and distinguished himself in Uu; saddle at the Oakland races today. This was the famous jockeys lirst appearance on the local track, and he was accorded an enthusiastic reception by the 0.000 race-goers present. His record during tlie eifternoon included a close second on Yakima Belle In the introductory sprint, third subsequently on Footloose and scoring finally with Light Wool in the feature race. Notters riding was devoid of sensational features, yet his victory on Light Wool in the Walden Handicap was marked by such mas terly horsemanship that he prevailed over a superior opponent in Kyebright. Russells ride on the runner-up was in such contrast to Notters finished .ioekeyship on the winner that the big crowd of spectators rose en masse and voiced its approval. Everyone was surprised at Russells claim of foul against "Light Wool, intensified when Notter was summoned before the stewards. There was a brief delay before the original placiugs were confirmed. It was the signal for another demonstration of applause for the successful jockey. Xotter said afterward that he was as much surprised as anvbodv at Russells claim of foul. "I was instructed to finish on the ridge in the stretch and tried to do so. but Light Wool tired and swerved gradually down the incline when Hearing the linish without impeding Eyebright in any way. As a matter of fact. I saw Eyebright crash into another horse at the eighth post with such force that he fell to his knees. I could not say positively whether the horse interfered with was Collector Jcssup or not. If it was he could have won off by himself but for the interference. I never saw such enthusiasm on any race course in the east and never pot such applause, even when I rode Celt to victory in the Rrooklvn Handicap last May." Fanatics brilliant victory in the two-year-old race marked the afternoons sport. The exquisitely bred son of Ballyhoo Bey and Hypocrite, which won like a coining real good one. was acquired 13 F. A. Forsythe for an insignificant sum at the recent dispersal sale of B. R. Thomas stud. Fanatics preparation has been -probably one of the briefest on record. In training for only five weeks, tddavs exploit is regarded as a phenomenal one and experts predict a great turf career for the grand-looking youngster. Favorites and outsiders shared equally in the aft-urnoons racing honors. It was a day of radiant beauty and the attendance of holiday proportions. The track, while rapidly drying out under the suns rays, was still heavy. Mucli work is being lavished on it and the going is expected to le conipnrativoiv good for the running of the big Christmas Handicap tomorrow.
