The filing of the suits is regarded as an attempt to hold the stockholders responsible for the debts of the club and a number of fine legal points are involved. The Salem track was built under the impression that bookmaking and poolselling could be carried on without interference, but when it came time to begin racing the New Hampshire authorities acted promptly. The meeting was run off by order of the Jockey Club, but the promoters lost a fortune. No attempt has been made since to reopen the track, which is in ruins.
