NOTES OF THE TURF. j Mars Cas.sidy. the well-known starter, lias left New York for Washington, where ho will spend the holidays at his old home. The schooling list at the Oakland track was increased this week by the addition of Vou Tromp, Orchan and Prince Brutus. Sam Jones, who raced a striug of horses in California several seasons ago. is reported to have died recently at his home in Oregon. Prince Karl Kinsky, who won the English Grand National 011 his own mare. Zoedone. and has recently retired from the presidency of the Austrian Jockey Club, has been honored by the Austrian emperor, Francis Joseph, with the Order of Knighthood of the Golden Fleece. M. X. Macfarlan. former secretary of the Memphis Jockey Club and judge at various race meetings in Canada. Texas and Chicago, has been engaced in the rice business since racing was killed in Tennessee. He predicts that it will soon be revived 011 a larger and grander scale than ever before. At the annual meeting of the Los Angeles Racing Association, which was held recently at Los Angeles. Cal.. the old staff of ofliuials was re-elected without a dissenting voice. The association is in excellent condition and its financial prospects are very promising. The attendance at the southern track this season has been especially good, and the business is improving constantly from the booking standpoint. Jockey C. Russell, under contract to O. A. Bian ehi. fell from one of his employers horses that he was exorcising one morning last week and was badly shaken up. but not seriously injured. Bianclii has not been overpleased with the manner in which the boy has been riding, and it is improbable that he will bo seen in the saddle for at least a week, even should he be in a condition to resume riding earlier.
