NIMR0D TOO MUCH FOR MAHER. At Newmarket. Eng., Thursday, the Americans scored on C. Newtons Sandbalh in tliĀ«- Payne Stakes, which was the chief event on the card, and iu doing so upset the presumed good thing in J. Buchanans Diamond Stud, which ran very currishly. Diamond Stud has been backed for the Derby. It is not often that a horse gets the better of Maher, but O. P.lackwclls Ninirod proved one too many for him. Ximrod WM to run in the opening race, but behaved like a mad thing iu the paddock. and after throwing his jockey three times and doing the best to roll over him the number had to be withdrawn. Sir Martin was again a good second favorite for the Epsom Derby, odds of 1 1 to 2 being taken to some good money, and Rayardo. which lias been buffeted about in the market this week like a shuttlecock, was hacked from 10 to 1 to 101 to 12. A dramatic incident in connection with Rayardo occurred at Newmarket, recalling scenes which one reads about in books of racing reminiscences. Mr. Fairie. owner of the colt, went up to a group of leading bookmakers and challcng-d tin m to bet. "I .nil prepared to make a big bet about Rayardo for place for the Derby. Has any one of you pluck to lay me:" he sail]. "What do you want. Mr. Fairie." asked the bookmakers. "I wain BBB.BM in 5. coo." mM the answer. There was silence for a moment, then Charlie Ilihbard said: "Ill lay you #111.000 to ,000." "I have told you what I want and if you wont lay that Ill Bja* have I bet at all." was the reply. No business was done.
