HOW TARAL STARTED THE HORSES. The post of official starter of Austria Hungary was offered to Fred Taral before he left that country. He declined tye place with thanks and said lie lias experienced all the bitterness of such an unthankful oflice. lie told his friends how. on reaching a race meeting close to New York, he found he could not draw the weight to ride, and n the president, rather than let him go away empty-handed, appointed him to fill tbe place of an absent official, the starter. Taral. thinking the lab an easy one. accepted, and going down to the post thought he had got the lot away on good terms until the bowling of the crowd made it clear that more than one was intent, on his scalp. He made tracks, with n yelling crowd following him, and got safely to the railway station, where he hid until he was able to creep away by the next train for New York, vowing that he would never again hid for surli an onerous positkm.
