MOVE AGAINST DUFFERIN PARK. Action Taken Looking to Cancelation of Charter Under which Half -Mile Track Is Operating. Toronto. Int.. June 14. — The DufTerin Park outlaw meeting, which started last Tuesday at the half-inile trick here, is probably near its finish. Betting on race courses in Canada is legal only when the track is that of a regularly incorporated club. Tie- York Killing and Driving Club, which is th figurehead for the meeting. Ins nil old charter which is said to have lapsed a dozen .years ago because of failure to operate. It develops that the officers and directors of the i luh were notified to appear before Hon. W. J. llitiiiin. the provincial secretary, to show cause win their charter should not be canceled forthwith. It is said that the noticed were serviil on men not now in otlice. hut who wen- formerly connected with tlie cli:b. and whose name* are those furnished the department in the last official report, required by tin act. on December SI. 1!«S. and who consequently are on record as the custodians of the charter. Tin- bearing in the ease was opened this morning before the provincial secretary, whose department deals with the issuing of charters for Joint stock companies in Ontario. The attorney-general was present. The club was required to show cause win the charter should not he canceled. It was originally issued to a company organized by the late Mort Kcichif in IMS; and never held any race meetings. Last year it was bought from Mrs. Keachic by Abe Orpen. for :900, and under its alleged rights he held an outlaw meeting on the half -mile track here last fall. It had been pointed out to the Ontario government/ that the charter was Invalid, being void by reason of failure to operate for a dozen years, and that It was not a bona fide organization, but merely the toil ot one individual, and that the meeting was for gambling purposes entirely. Counsel for the elui male a bitter harangue about the opposition of purists and socialists in the meeting, hut had pa argument or evidence except that the charter n kept alive by having paid the annual fee to the government, though It never operated. He asked for a weeks adjournment, hut got only one day. and the matter will be taken up tomorrow. In the event of the cancelation of the charter the Dufferiu Park tnretlng will conic to an Immediate end. The character and ownership of the enterprise have been matters of public notoriety, Some of the local newspapers toasted it for u day or two and then ignored It. as others did from the licginning.
