BIG SWEEPS IN INDIA. In point of enthusiasm Derby sweepstakes, especi ally in the Loudon clubs, broke all records this year, no doubt owing to the kings chances in the great race. The biggest sweep in Hie world is that of the Calcutta Turf Club. Last year, upwards of 130,000 tickets were subscribed, which, at ten ru pees each, means roughly 50,000. Of the amount subscribed, the chance of the winner takes forty Iter cent., the second twenty per cent, and tlie third ten | cr cent., the other starters dividing ten pet cent. Iietween them, and ten per cent, going to the drawers of non starters left in tlie lace at the time the sweep closes. The club takes the remaining ten per cent., which, after paying expenses, goes to the benefit of the race fund. Two Londoners. "F. J. IT.." with ticket No. 02.350. and "Standard." with No. 42.204. drew Louvlers and Electric Boy re spectively In this years sweep. The former Is a valet at the Badminton Club, but he was wise, or unwise enough to sell a share in his draw before the race to a well-known racing man for ,000. Nevertheless, he is reported as having won 2,000. The value of the second prize was 00,000, so that tlie valet lost over half In tile deal: but he was still lu lucks way. for he also drew I.uvlers in the New-Imperial Club sweep. A year ago Slgnoriiietta was drawn bv a clerk In the Bank of Madras In the Cal cutla sweep. Orbv. In IftOT. fell to the third otlicer iu one of the British India Line steamers, while a few rears ago, .o.HNl went to an eugine driver on the J. I. P.
