VANCOUVERS NEW RACE TRAOK. Vancouver. B. C, July 14. The new race track on Lulu Island, which the British Columbia Thoroughbred Association will open on August 21. is located on a level stretch of ground, from where, rising in the background beyond the sweep of prairie Hat are the magnificent mountains on the north shore of Burrard Inlet. The enclosure comprises 100 acres and the track itself will be a mile in circumference. The soil is clay bottom, giving the very best subsoil for a foundation, being springy, yet solid, while the top soil Is just what Is required for the purpose. There is not a stick or a stone anywhere on the land and everything Is In perfect condition. Tl" proposition was originated several months ago :by Springer Bros., and since then several prominent local sportsmen have been interested. The property was secured on a fifty-year lease, on terms even better than a purchase outright. The greater portion of the heaviest work on the track has already been completed. The track is seventy-five feet in width, with a raise of one foot to the side, but at the curves the height is live and a half feet at the apex. Carpenters arc busy constructing stable room for ."00 horses and next month 100 more will be put on. The appointments in connection with the stables will be in keeping with the excellence of the proposition, which will be on a highclass scale througbout. There will le electric light in every stall, with water also and no charge whatever will be made. The water system is now being installed. It will be brought from an arm of the Fraser river, about half a mile from the course, being forced through a four-Inch pipe by a large pumping plant. A tank, of 00,000 gallons capacity will give sufficient pressure. Tli" abundant supply of good water is an important feature in connection with a race track, but as in everything else in this instance, one would think the location had been made to order nothing is lacking. The grandstand, which will seat 3,500 people, faces the north and. with the sun overhead, will command a full view of the entire track.
