EDWARD SIMMS MAY RE-ENTER RACING. New York. July 23. Edward Simms of Kentucky, who raced The Kentuckian, The Puritan and several other good horses hereabouts some eight or ten years ago, has reappeared here. Mr. Simms gave up racing after selling The Puritan, a half-brother to The Kentuckian, and went to Texas to try his luck in the Beaumont oil iields. Fortune, has smiled upon him In. Texas, it is said, and it may not be a great while before he gets back into racing. It Is Intimated that he may be a patron of the September yearling sales at Sheepshead Bay. If The Kentuckian had won the Brighton Handicap of 1900 Mr. Simms would not have had to go to Texas to recoup his fortunes. He sent The Kentuckian to the post fit to run for a kings ransom in the Brighton and backed him heavily at 20 to 1. He and his friends stood to .win something like 5,-000 on the race, but The Kentuckian was beaten bv Jack" Point, a horse A. L. Aste had taken out of a selling race two season before, largely because of an error of Judgment on the part of his rider at a critical- stage.
