LEAMENCE TAKES PINKOLAS MEASURE. Handicap at Latonia Furnishes Interesting Struggle — Closing Race Marred by Falling of Three Horses. Cincinnati. O.. July 8.-Big fields that started in all the races except the handicap caused much crowding at Latonia today. There was a serious-looking spill in the closing dash when White Eagle. Laveno and Robert Powell, ridden respectively by F. Jackson. A. Burton and L. Williams, fell. The riders escaped with nothing more serious than shake-ups. Laveno and Robert Powell were uninjured, but White Eagle, after righting himself, crashed through the inner fence and received injuries that will probably necessitate his destruction. Todays card was largely framed with a view to allowing the cheaper borses opportunity to win and the limit number of starters went to the Boat in most of the races. The handicap served as a good medium for betting. Pinkola. Foxv Mary and Leumenee all receiving extensive support. Pinkola was slightly in favor over Foxv Marv at the end. The running was always between the three. Ieamence drawing away in the stretch to wiu handily after having saved a good deal of ground on the last turn when Foxy Mary carried Pinkola wide. Pinkola acquitted himself well under his impost of 123 pounds and shook off Foxv Marv in the stretch for second money. J." B. Respcss recent acquisitions, the horse Romp and jockey Lofton, proved a winning combina tion in the third race. Mockler. which was transferred before post time by Harney Schreiber to J. C. Cahn. well known as the owner of Linda. Typhoon II. and other good racers, scored for his new owner in the opener. Mnry Day. well ridden by Troxler. heat the outsider. Coletla. in the second. The winner escaped the crowding behind her at the first turn. The three-quarters sprint race went to Em peror William in a hard drive with Mettle Bereaud and Ethelda. George J. Long, the well-known owner-breeder and memlier of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, was among todays visitors and will remain until the close. H. G. Bedwell served notice on the Latonia officials thai he would appeal to the Kentucky State Racing Commission from the ruling against him handed down yesterday. Mr. Bedwell will make a plea to the commission for an early hearing of his ease on the ground that the expense of keeping his large stable in idleness is heavy. Judge Price will at once forward the record of the ease to the eoru-missiou. Todays successful three -horse combination, consisting of Romp. Leemence aud Galllota, paid 45.80 for each investment. Emperor William will he the only one of the Schreiber string quartered here to lie shipped to Windsor next week. The others will he sent to Woodlands Farm, near St. Louis. W. 0. Parmer was among todays visitors, having stopped over mi his way to Detroit. He reports that the Windsor meeting this year probably will be the most successful on record, as many of the leading owners of the country have applied for accommodations. Arthur Elrod was an arrival today and confirmed the report that he is promoting the new track in Prince George County. .Maryland. He stated that everything would tie in readiness for the twenty-days meeting to be held this fall, beginning on September 26. Joseph A. Murphy is slated to preside and John Boden will act as racing secretary and associate judge. James Milton will do the starting. The racinir will he conducted under the rules of the Southern Jockey Club, to which body application will be made for dates. J. I. Strode came from SI. Louis today. He announced that he had completed arrangements for the building of a track at Pensacola and that lie expected to hold a fall meeting there of thirty days luration following the later-State Fair. He is also planning to give a thirty-days spring meeting at Pea-tafola to follow the racing at Tampa. F. J. Pons announced today the purchase of a home and farm in Tennessee adjacent to Walter O. Parmers place, and states that he will attempt to breed thoroughbreds after he acquires some choice mares and a likely stallion. Jockey Herbert was taken to task today by the judges for his listless handling of Mamie Algol in the closing race of yesterday.
