RICH STAKE FOR HILDRETH NOVELTY TAKES HOPEFUL, NETTING WINNER HANDSOME SUM OF 9,140. Hildreth Stable Earnings for 1910 Now in Excess of S100.000 — Sir John Johnson Beats Olambala and Others in Merchants and Citizens. Saratoga. N. Y.. August 20. — Novelty, winner of the leccnt ma tcli race with Textile, scored easily over the best I wo-year-uids here in the Hopeful today. The Hopeful is the richest two-year-old offer-bag of he Saratoga Association and the race was worth 119.140 to s. G. Hildreth. owner of the colt. Novelty is in the Futurity and his performance today cawed his stock to boom for that big event, to he decided August 31, In addition to the Hope fnl, the Saratoga A — oclation had as a feature the Merchants1 and Citizens Handicap and it furnished a surprise when Sir Joan Johnson, from the Bevcr-Wyck Stable of Frank Nolan, was first, with John Han fords Boaoocara ■eeond, while Kichard T. Wilson, Jr. a Olambala, winner of the Brighton, Saratoga and Champlain Handleape, could only reach third place, s. c. Hildretha Dalma t ian. recently winner of the Travels, was also beaten, finishing fourth. A big half-holiday crowd was on hand and while It did not come BP to the monster crowd of a week ago, it was easily the second largest attendance id the season. The track had not entirely dried out from recent rains and was slow, but the weather was delightfully bright and the stands were a perfect blaze of beautiful costumes. The running of the Merchants and Citizens. Ihusjgh the secondary feature in point of value, was perhaps a more Interesting race than the nunrflan of the two-year-olds and it was marked by some bad riding and a claim of foul alter the tinish. Sil John Johnson, which has shown himself to be a m.irvelously good .-printer, as well as having ability as a stayer, was first away, but just as he broke ho collided with Dalmatian and knocked the three rear-old off his stride He quickly went into a nod lead and at no time was he headed. Archibald rated him along in treat and reserved him for the stretch. When he dually called on the big fellow the horse responded gamely, but he swerved to the outside slightly and in doing so carried Danoscara with him. After the race. A. Walsh, who had the mount on DanvMcara, made a claim of foal against the winner and there was a long deliberation before Sir John Johnson was couffiiued in his position, olambala was another that was unfortunate in tht running, though bis misfortunes were due to mistakes made by his rider. Butwoll ran him into a pocket approaching the stretch turn and in the run home be took him all over the track. Dalmatian, after ids hard luck at the break, was rushed up by Dugan and he too was messed about badly when it came to the stretch drive. The Winning of Novelty in the Hopeful came as something of a surprise, for while he had shown both in the Saratoga Special and his match with Textile thai be was a goi*l one. he was not considered food enough to take up 190 pounds successfully in the tield that he was meeting. For that reason he was as good as 12 to 1. while the Keene trio. Iron Musk. Heatherbroom and Sweepaway. grouped in the betting, ruled favorite, with erea money the closing price. Nauakon, the R. t. Wilson, Jr.. Starter, had many followers, and there was a demand for the Belmont pair, Watervale ami Footprint . Black fool was another that was considered as baring a first-class chance. Starter Cassidy had a gmal deal of trouble in lining up the field of eleven that stalled and when he anally sprung the barrier it was to a bad start. Iron Mask and Novelty were away nicely in motion, but the others were tangled, and Sweepaway. S Wanna BOa, Bouncer and Watervale had little chance, while Nuushon was oil none too well. As was expected, lion Mask rushed into a long lead, but Novelty was chasing .••.long behind him in resolute fashion all the way and when the Keen Ii faltered a furlong from tin tinish. tlu Hildreth colt drew alongside ami. coming on with groat Courage, was the winner by a length and a half. lion Mask, though tiring badly, lasted to save I be place by a head from Naushon, which cloned with a ureal rush.
