WELLESLEY TO WESTERNER]1 ROUND THE WORLD RUNS FAST FIVE AND A HALF FURLONGS AT SARATOGA Goes Distance in 1:06 with Ease — Cherryola Bid Up from ,500 to ,400 After Successful Effort — Castleton-Breds Conspicuous. Saratoga, ft. Y.. August 2."..— Round the World, W. O. Yankes fast lilly from MM west, was an easy winner of the Wellesley Handicap. 1 lit- feature nine of an excellent program offered today 1 y the Saratoga AJfeodation. It was a live and a half furl on gs dash, for two voar-old fillies, and when the thei danchtr* c,f Laekfard and Nellie Bly ran the dletanee in 1:00. she hung out the fastest time that has heen made during the meeting. It was thought l y many that her race in the Adirondack Handicap yesterday had taken, so much out of her that she Would not come Iwick today, ami for that reason the liberal price of even money was offered against her chances. It was another hriirht day and the track was at its best, though a high wind that was blowing tip the stretch did not make conditions altogether favorahle for fast time. The card offered brought out good fields for each race and excellent sport resulted. While Bashti. top weight in the Wellesley Handicap, was not sent to-the post, it was a repre-senlative lot that met Round the World, and Housemaid was rated as second hest when she took BB 120 pounds to 123 that the Yanke filly was required to carrv. Then was little contest to tlie race. Jockey Walsh had Round the World off in a good position and she at once raced to the front. Walsh made no effort to open a big lead, though the lilly was oa| ablc of doing so had it been desired. Instead she was rated along in a safe lead to the head of tlie at retch and from there to the finish she cannon to wiu with great ease by four lengths. Housemaid easily saved second place and Thomas Hitchcock. Jr.s Savannah was the one ki race into third w~t*]uue. Second in importance to the running of the Welles-ley was the three-quarter-mile handicap that brought together as remarkable a lot of sprinters as have been. seen in one race all season. It was won by Mellaande, a filly that was purchased by L. P. Doerbofer at the recent sale of the horses of lamp R Keene. Helmet, another that was purchased by E. R. Bradley at the same sale, Oniahcd third, while the pair were split by Besom, still another that was Castle ton bred, though he has been racing lor I*. S. I. Randolph lor the past few seasons. Ticket of Leave was winner of the short course steeplechase, but his victory was in a great measure due to tin- breaking down of Touchwood. David Dun-loirs starter. Touchwood forced all the pace, but he was taken wide most of the way and was not handled to the liest advantage by jockey Williams. He came back to the scales apparently sound, but when the bandages were removed from his forelegs it was discovered that a tendon had given way during the race. Five started and Thistledale. when a close contender, fell at the water jump on the feast turn Of lh.- course, rainier, who rode him. escaped with a slight shaking up aud the old horse was not hurt by his accident. After Cherryola hail won the mile race for mares anil geldings, she was run up from ,500, her entered price, to . too. bv Karl Litmcll. owner of Black Mate, the second horse. Tlie filly was protected by .1. T. Ireland, her owner, with the cus-tomary Live Wire, after two or three failures, won the mile and three-sixteenth race all the way. though Bonnie Kelso might have beaten him with better luck. Tlie latter was held at the start and was pinched off test as the horses were in motion. After these misfortunes he laced into second place. Via Octavia. from the stable of August Belmont, was an easy winner of the race for i.wo-ye!ir-old maidens at the end of the urogram. After Live Wire won his race he was sold by J. F. Bartlett to R. D. Williams for .,500.
