1* . ! " • NOVELTY SURELY GOOD COLT HILDRETH JUVENILE CARRIES 135 POUNDS TO VICTORY AT SARATOGA. Adds Rensselaer Handicap, Worth ,600, to His List of Triumphs — Countless Beats Olambala in Cup Contest. Saratoga. N. Y.. August 27. — Samuel C. Hildrethg great colt. Novelty, winner of the Saratoga Special ami the Hopeful Stakes, added the Bensseiaer Handicap to his good list of successes this afternoon over the coarse of the Saratoga Association. He took up 135 pounds and beat some of the best colts and BUieti of the year. The otliciai time hung out for Noveltys three-quarters was 1:13, but the colt was limed privately by several horsemen a full second raster. Not alnee Hamburg has a two-year-old won under such weight. It was in 1897 tliat Hamburg carried 135 pounds in the Croat Eastern Handicap, and alter a delay of fifty-five minutes at the post he was returned the winner. It was a day of good things at the track. Today .was the originally scheduled closing day of the meeting of the Saratoga Association and "as is the lis, 01,1 the program was an especially brilliant one, embracing besides the Bensseiaer Handicap, which is a new fixture and a rich one. being worth .t;iM» to the winner, the Saratoga Cup of a mile ami three-qaartera thai had its first running in 1885, and the P.everwyek Bteenlecbaae. Tbe outcome of the cap race was something of a shock When Countless, tio 111 the stable id .lotiu ii. Greener, and winner of the Merchants and Citizens Handicap, took the measure ot Blcfaard T. Wilson. Jr.s olambala. a prohibitive favorite. The Beverwyck Steeplechase resulted in a fiasco when the saddle on The Welkin slipped and she was beaten with ridiculous ease by Hylda, the only other starter. The crowd was a half -holidav one, fully 12.000 enthusiasts being on hand to cheer Novelty and Countless after their respective victories. The race run by Novelty will make his stock in the Futurity, to be run Wednesday, take a tremendous boom. He has shown in all his recent races that he is the colt ot Ihe year, but i! was thought that the exacting Impost of 135 pounds would be too much for him to handle. For that reason he was as gaad as 4 to 1 at post time, and there were several in the field that were hacked to take his measure, notablv Round the World, the western filly from the stable of W. G. Xaake. Naushon. the starter that R. T. Wilson, Jr., sent to the post, was in readv demand and many ol the others in the field of thirteen that raced had good foUewtoga. Novelty broke well, but it was Somprolus that cut out the running. Shilling was content to rate along 111 second place with the Hihlreth colt, while Round the World, whose forte is speed, was in third imsi-tion. This remained the order to the head of the Stretch, where Somprolus faltered and Novelty went to the front. From there to the finish he successful ly stood off all challenges, though at the end h« had to be bard ridden to beat Naushon home. Tho Wilson colt, as in all of his races, was a trifle sluggish leaving the IMst and to race into second place he had to run a marvelouslv good race. Textile, the colt that was recently easily beaten tiy Novelty under equal weights, raced into third place, and Bound the World, with no excuse whatever, quit badly and was not a contender in the final furlong. It was last year that B. T. Wilson. Jr. paid John C. ireener a big price for Olambala, and ooatleea, Ihe one to lake his measure in the Cap, was sent to the post by the same breeder. V. Powers had the leg 1,0 on Countless and he made every pool a winning one in the long mile and three-quarters tnii. It was ihought by some that Powers was making exct ssive use of tin- son of The Commoner, but as a matter of fact be had him under stilt restraint until entering the stretch the last time. He could not well have taken his mount back without actually choking him and the ride lie received was just to the liking of the little racer. After he had his company well beaten be came 011 to win going a wav by four lomrths. Olambala was well handled by jockey Archibald, but when he was called on at the head of the stretch, lie faltered badly. If is probable that he had had too much racing under heavy weights. Amelia Jenks from the stable of Mrs. L. A. Livingston, finished a distant third and ":ief Kee. added bv John Dy Stent just before the race, was the only other starter. When the field in the Iteverwvck Stei pleohase was reduced to The Welkin and Hylda, it waa considered that Henry Cravens mare had tad race at her mercy, and she was made a :; to 5 favorite. Tl Bh she jumped badly all the way it is probable that she would have been returned the winner-I ad 1, not been that her saddle slipped just when jockey Davidson was making his run on Ihe last turn of ihe tiehi. Hybia ran a remarkably good race and oatjamped The Welkin at all atagea, but op the Hal she was no match for ihe daughter of ontraet. The history of the Beverwyik Steeplechase is as follows: Year.
