CALIFORNIA BREEDER FEELS ENCOURAGED. Saratoga, N. Y., September 1. — The well-known California turfman and breeder of thoroughbreds, W. OB. Macdonough, whose yearlings were sold in the paddock at Saratoga last week, is quoted as follows in relation to the prospects for the coming season at Oak btad: ■Fverything points to a most successful season for the New California Jockey Club and preparations for the reception of an unusually large number of eastern horsemen were well under way when I left San Francisco two weeks ago. The racing atmosphere on the coast has cleared tremendously. When the season of 1000 was inaugurated it was a eaae of trying to keep the sport alive, hut before the season was half over T. 11. Williams saw his way clear to offer better purses, larger crowds, who were having some freedom of action, making it possible for the management to be more liberal. 1 never saw a community more eager for the continuation of the sport, and there is no doubt al all about California easily being in earnest in tin- effort to restore racing to its old-! hue prosperity and popularity. I am told by friends that there will be a revival of the sixirt in Tennessee, and the meeting here in Saratoga just cloned and the prices yearlings and horses in training have lining III are most encouraging to men like myself who both breed and race."
