DAY OF DISAPPOINTMENTS WELL-FANCIED HORSES FAIL TO RUN UP TO EXPECTATIONS AT WINDSOR. Fort Worth and John Reardon Only Bright Spots for Followers of Favorites — Caper Sauce Is Beaten at Short Odds — Double for Burttschell. Detroit, Mich., September 2. — Spirited rat-ins. attended by frequent surprises, featured the sport at Windsor this afternoon. The followers of favorites were repeatedly bumped, beginning with the opening ■ash, in which Caper Sauce, at prohibitive odds, sustained defeat by Mill on the Floss, and their •roes continued in the succeeding failures of Oak-hurst, Baycrin, Ben Double, Wool casta and Dosnl-tliilda. Fort Worm and John Reardon, the latter at odds on. were the only favorites to meet with success. "1he chief upset was furnished by Tripping, a recent discard from the stable of James It. Keene, which landed the third race after a furious drive to down Bayerin. J. W. Burttschell scored a double dining the afternoon with Fort Worth and MhUtine, both being extensively supported by a his stable following. The one-time crack, Chapultepec, again met defeat, hut this time it was dm- more to poor handling than lack of prowess, liavis. wild Mae him. made freijueiit mistakes and The Golden Butterfly led him to the finish by nearly half a length. Ken Double, one of tin- starters in the race with this pair, ran disappointingly, due to interference with which he met during tin- Brat quarter mile. The steeplechase was spectacular for the first turn of the course, inn thereafter Osage had matters his own way and won cantering from I r. Heard anil Dr. ,1. F. Aitken. Oakhurst, the favorite in The chase, after running kindlv for one turn of the Held, developed a tit of the sulks and InaBj pulled up at the eleventh hedge. The J. W. Schorr stable took another purse when John Reardon landed in the r hying dash, but only after a Straggle lo dispose of First Ieep. * Sally lreston returned to winning form and displayed a creditable performance in the seventh race, when she heat a smart band of sprinters after what appeared to l e a hopeless chase from a poor begin-n lug. John Hsehmeister, general manager of the Latonia Jockey Club, was an arrival from Saratoga this morning. lie is here in the interests of the stakes to in- inn at tin- Latonia fall meeting, which dose tomorrow. Mr. Hachmeister reports that entries to the Latonia stakes will average about forty each. Wise Mason and tin- two-year-old Imprint, recently purchased bjr S. A. Clopton. arrived from Saratoga last night after being four days on the road. Both horses shipped well, although they tilled up sonic on their Hip north. They were held up at Niagara falls by the government veterinary and were released only yesterday morning. Willie Shields has reserved ten stalls at Latonia and will probably ship his stable to the MiUdale track ill reel from Windsor. Francis J. Pons will ship his stable from here to Louisville and at the conclusion of that meeting will send his entire lot south. Mr. Pone contemplates disposing of all hut a few of his horses. He will retain only enough to keep alive his interest in the sport. Much of the management of the Jacksonville track will fall on the shoulders of Mr. Pons this winter and he does not wish to he hampered witti a lot of horses, bonce his determination to sell. James Carrul hers, one of the directors of the Montreal Jockey Club and a prominent turfman in this country, was a visitor at Windsor this afternoon. !». C. fottle will ship the veteran sprinter. John Crittin II.. from here to Oklahoma next week. The borse will probably he raced again at Jacksonville this winter. it. It. Williams will remain with his horses at Saratoga lor a month before shipping his stable to Florida. Malitine picked up five pounds for her victory yesterday, hut tlie extra weight did not stop her and she sgain won easily. John Hachmelster was besieged by horsemen for laf la mat ion in regard to the 0,000 Dominion Handicap to he run darins the fall meeting at tin- Furl Frio tno k. The question as to whether the weights allotted by Secretary Haginn at the time the summer meeting was declared off will stand will he referred to the committee of the Canadian Bacing Associations and the Niagara Racing Association wili abide by their decision.
