LATONIA HOLDS OUT SPLENDID PROMISE Cream of Horses in Training in America to Be Seen in Action There Next Week Cincinnati O October 17 A letter reached La tonia recently which revived memories of the Mer ¬ chants Stakes the chief event of the opening day of the fall meeting of the Kenton County track in 1X02 This event is to be revived this fall at La ¬ tonia on the opening day of the coming meeting October 21 under a new name the Latonia Autumn Inaugural Handicap for threeyearolds and upward one mile and a sixteenth guaranteed cash value 2000 The letter referred to was from Arthur Xewsum now a prominent business man in El Paso Tex who iir 1892 was a trainer of horses He was in charge in those days of the Pastime Stable owned by Xick Finzer a wealthy tobacco man of Louis ¬ ville who for years was a strong patron of racing and always maintained a string of race horses of stake class classIn In this letter Mr Xewsum recalled the race of long ago and analyzed it as a remarkuble contest as a twoyearold colt trained by him beat three remark ¬ able older racers as well as three youngsters of his own age Thg remarkable colt was King Lee ridden that day under eightysix pounds by Sotfp Perkins now still around tlie western race tracks and big enough to fight Jack Johnson JohnsonThe The young son of King Alfonso was pitted against the western turf queen Ida Pickwick owned by E g Gardner of Tennessee now dead Chief Justice a sturdy threeyearold by Hindoo that was trained by Capt J T Williams and the great mare Senor ita owned by the late Pittsburg turfman Capt S S Brown and trained by Peter Wimmer who Is coming back to Latonia this fall for the first time in many years with his string of horses including Intrinsic Beatrice Explicit and Any Port The twoyearolds besides KlngiLoo in that race were Ed Greenwood owned by W G Cannon of Tennessee Falstaff belonging to E C Headley of John Cooper fame and Lays trained by Owen Bradley BradleyThe The race was one of tlie fiercest contests ever fought between two horses at Latonia For the last half mile King Lee and Ida Pickwick can together like a team It Williams was on the mare and he rode her masterfully but she weakened in the last few strides and the game twoyearold beat her a head running the mile over a heavy track in the remarkable time of 142 Speaking of this per ¬ formance not so long ago jockey Williams now long retired said that of the fortyfour races she won he doubted if she ever ran a greater race than she did that day with the twoyearold King Lee Tills too in face of the fact that her victories Included such races as the Two Thousand Sweepstakes La ¬ tonia and St Louis Fair Oaks Belle Meade Mis ¬ souri and Delbech Stakes Latonia Decoration Han ¬ dicap twice Cincinnati Hotel Handicap twice and Autumn Cash Queen City and Memorial Han ¬ dicaps She died at Hamburg Place in Kentucky alHint two years ago long outliving King Lee which noted colt beat her in the sensational race Mr Xew sums letter recalls It is notable that her dam was by King Lees sire King Alfonso the first winner of the Louisville St Leger a race revived this fall at Churchill Downs DownsA A striking feature of the coming fall meeting nt the beautiful course which nestles in the Ken ¬ tucky hills just back of Covingtoii is the increase in purses and overnight race values this fall over previous seasons For instance the first weeks program shows no purse less than 400 and ten races during the first six days arc of 500 values The program for the first six days also shows two stake events calling for an outlay of 3200 while the purse races daily aggregate as follows followsFirst First day 2100 second day 2COO third day 2500 fourth day 2000 fifth day 2000 sixth day 2200 2200The The Latonia Autumn Inaugural Handicap of 2000 on the opening day swells the total distribution for that date to 4100 and the 1200 valuation of the Rosedale Stakes down for decision on Saturday October 29 makes 3400 for that day and this brings the grand total for the six days up to 17800 a dayIt general average of a shade under 3OOO per day It seems likely that not less than 00 to 1000 horses will be housed at Latonia track by the open ¬ ing day of the coming fall meeting The stables certain to be on baud with the number of horses are about as follows followsW W T Anderson 0 M M Allen 5 J Arthur 4 more of tile latter variety than have been at Latonia or any other Kentucky track for years The yearsThe prospects are surely bright for a remarkable meeting and the sport fnrnishefl will compare well with that of autumn meetings on the metropolitan tracks tracksGeneral General Alanager John Ilachmeister made a flying trip here yesterday from Louisville to inspect tlie improvements that are going on at the track and to make the final arrangements for the meeting which iKgins next Alouday AloudayLatonia Latonia never hart as bright an outlook for a big racing meeting as at the present time said be Loulsvilie is going along iu great style and Latonia Is sure to follow in the same way There cannot be anything else but good racing because there are nothing but good horses contesting contestingRacing Racing Secretary Edward Alaginn arrived Saturday night He is a busy man getting up the rest of the program and figuring on th inaugural Handicap weights which will out on Friday FridayThe The Latonia course is reputed to be In extra good condition this fall and it is the expectation that with a far amount of favorable weather some of the existiiig track records will be reduced
