T THE RACING STARS OF 1910 Good horses, high-class horses, were not lacking In American racing of 1910. There is no very satisfactory basis of comparison by which to measure the horses of one year with those of another. However, in the recognized .essentials of speed of a superior order, ability to maintain that speed under heavy weights and capacity lt stay as well as run fast, the best horses of 1910 compare favorably with the stars of other years past. Itrooinstieks feat of running a mile and a quarter in 2:02 has always ranked as a high-class performance. lie carried 104 lmunds anil was a three-year-old. This year the four-year-old. Olambala. with 122 pounds up, raii the same distance in the same time at Sheepshcad llay. All things considered, the two races cpnipare well and Olambalas serves to accent the claim that the best horses of this year were very good horses indeed. He was by no means the champion, that distinction unquestionably belonging to that remarkable racer. Fitz Herbert. It is true that, the latter was not raced much, but in what ho was asked to do he amply demonstrated he was still the foremost racer of his time. Ballot ran so close to his old-time form in some of his races as to suggest that Englands climate did not agree with him and that he "must have been far from bis best when raced there in 1909. His sire. Voter, was taken to England and raced there with worse results, for liallot did win a race, while Voter failed in all of his seven attempts over English race courses. Voters unlucky venture to England took place in 1S9S. when he was a four-year-old, and is a chapter in his history not generally known. King James ran some brilliant races, quite up to his superb form of 1909. Keeue.s grand mare, Maskotte, hardly raced as well as was expected of her, but creditably notwithstanding her sometimes failures. Fashion Plate was credited with some line performances and is a capital race horse, but unfortunate in that unsound forelegs at times prevent his running up tp the full measure of his natural gifts. Jack, Atkin gave not . infrequent indications of having grown track weary, but when in the mood showed himself the magnilicent sprinter he has always been and, besides that, gave the lie to those who insisted lie could not stay beyond a mile vhen he won Fort Eries 0,000 Dominion Handicap at a mile and a quarter in fast time. Over the Canadian tracks Donald Macdouald piwed himself not only a greatly improved horse, but one of -the most consistently good, ones of the year as well. Aside from these lars of tlieVuler division, such others of high merit as Priscillian. Field Mouse. Trance, Kings Daughter, Hilarious. Helmet, Meli-sande, Rose tjueen, Firestone, Ximbus, Arasee, Hobbling Water. Harrigan, Ronnie Kelso,. Spellbound, Hanbridge. Sir John Johnson, Guy Fisher, Resom. Mary Davis. Tom Hayward, Eestlgouelie, Alfred the Great and others that might be named, gave pleasure to patrons of racing by the display of these qualities of speed anil courage peculiar to the thoroughbred. Xo three-year-old of the first class appeared in the racing of 1910. but several of high class were in action, as well us quite a number of more than average excellence. Dalmatian was the best colt of the year and Ocean Round was supreme among the fillies. Dalmatian was sold to Louis Winans aiid is now in England. Sturdy, lleot and game, lie yet could not be ranked with such real stars as Colin, Rallot, Peter Pan. Burgomaster, Artful and Charles Edward. However, he is good enough to acquit him self creditably abroad if he thrives in the new climate to which he has been taken. Ocean Rounds mile in 1:37s at Saratoga is to be accepted as a true index to her really remarkable speed when at her best. Early in the year Sweep ran some races that seemed to promise a career worthy of a Futurity winner, but an accident led to his retirement after he had won the Lawrence Realization. Generalizing the other three-year-olds of mark, it may be said that Prince Imperial. The Tuik. Sager, Follie Levy, Countless, Everett. Polls, Donau, Cherryola, Gras-mere and Starbottlo raced to about the form indicated by their careers as two-year-olds, while Rocky ORrien, The Fad, Fauntleroy. Mexoana. Candleberry and Turret as distinctly failed to race to their early promise. Rocky ORrien, in particular, was a grievous failure, due probably, more to a sour and sulky indisposition to extend himself than to any inability to race to a high standard. Everetts two miles" in 3:255 at Pimlico afforded convincing proof of the goodness of our middle class three-year-olds, as also did the defeat of Olanibala by Countless, in the Saratoga Cup at weightfor-age. The best four-year-olds of 1911 seem likely to prove capable of providing racing of a high order, and it is a good thing for the sport that such is the case. Notably good two-year-olds were abundant and if at the end of the year Novelty ranked pre-eminent among the colts anil geldings, and Rashti among the fillies, it only emphasizes their excellence, so truly formidable was the opposition they had to vanquish to attain their exalted stations in the records of the year. Representatives of Rock Sand and Adam made their first appearance iu American racing and played important parts. Footprint and Trap Roek giving gratifying token of what Rock Sand may be expected to do for the improvement of our bloodstock in the future, while Rashti, Zeus, Seth and Leah showed bow severe was our loss when Adam was sent to France to be sold at auction. Not far behind Novelty and Rashti were such splendid young horses as Iron Mask, now in England. Round the World, Textile Xaushon and Housemaid. Then following these in varying gradations of merit were such good winners as Premier, Frank Ruhstaller. Heather-broom. Peceavl. Meridian. Princess Callaway, Martin W. Littleton. Capsize, Golden Egg. Moncrelf. Sidney R.. Pawhuska. Chilton Squaw, Lahore, Oracle. Eddie Dale. Princess Industry. Governor Gray. Labold, Rye Straw. Grover Hughes. Dune Campbell, Rash. Horizon, Loehiel. Babbler. Ilelene, Pluvious, Oriental Pearl. Little Father, Ella Bryson. Pav Streak, Imprint, Sterlin. Flying Wolf, Eagle Bird. Xottio Marchmont. Darling, Winning Widow. Miss Nett, Rogon, Via Octavia. Shooting Spray. Ivabel. Bobby Buyer, I.ady Ormicant, Jack Denman, John Pender-grast, Helen Barbec. Beatrice Soule, Planutess, Onager. Dr. Duenner, Kormak. Aldrian. Edda. Sand-bill, Rockville. Edmond Adams. Trustee. Du Bois, Mockler. Jiin Rasey. The Nigger, Semprolus, Danger Mark, Frank Mullens, Royal Meteor. Star Charter, Clay, Amalll, Stinger, Love-Not, Golden Ruby, Rue, Swcepaway, White Wool and Blackfoot, an aggregation that will stand much hopeful inspection and analvsis. having in view the probable quality of the three-year-olds of 1911. It was in 1902 that the American Racing Manual made its first publication of the racing statistics of the United States . and Canada. Since ami including that year, the leading money-winning horses of each year have been: Year. Horse. Age.
