THE MUTUEL EXPERIMENT AT JUAREZ. El .Paso. Tex., January 5. Interest in the pari-nvutuel devices at the Jockey Club Juarez track has increased in the last week or so. The management, to provide greater convenience for the public, moved the three machines from the grandstand to the entrance of the betting ring. They are now conveniently placed, and many who prefer book betting occasionally tarry and invest a few dollars on their choices. In races won by odds-on favorites the machines outpay the books, tout the volume of business done in the mechanical devices is not sufficient to make the same rule apply in the case of long shots, as their patrons are of the class who take chances on any horse. At present the three machines at Juarez are opor ated at a loss to tho management, but all this was figured out by Manager Winn lefore he installed the devices. His idea is to acquaint the racing public of this section with the system of betting which has gained such popularity on the Kentucky tracks in the last few years, and in future operate the devices in conjunction, with the books, the latter filling in the void occupied by the auction pools on the courses governed by the Kentucky State Racing Commission. So far no complaint has come from the lookmakers on account of tbe devices being installed here. Thoy seem to figure it helps to make new converts and adds to the business done by the ring. There is no scarcity of money in tho Juarez betting ring, nor has there been at any time during the present meeting. The books can handle all they want if they lay the odds, and in every race there is plenty of money for at least two or three horses, and very often a contest come,? up when every horse in the race is well backed.
