JOCKEYS ARE REINSTATED MONCRIEF JUDGES RESTORE LOFTUS AND OBERT TO "GOOD STANDING. Action Follows Thorough Investigation Into Abrasion Race Proposal for Perpetuation of Racing at Jacksonville Meets with Approval. Jacksonville. Fla., January 27. Keen contests attended the running or two races at Moncrief this afternoon, but the winners of the reiuaining four races had plenty to spare at Ihc liuish. The card was not one for race-goers to enthuse over, the licst Tace on the program in the way of class being the fourth, which was a dash of three-quarters of a mile, in which some of the best sprinters at the track went to the post. It resulted in au easy victory for the three-year-old Via Oetavia. which led his lield from start to liuish and won easily by a couple of lengths. Behind Via Oetavia were such good horses as T. M. Green. Master Robert, Douau, Moxouna and Antenor. The winner carried 102 pounds and ran the distance in 1:12. The pace was fust throughout, the lirst quarter being run in Jill and the half mile in 40j. Ed Le Van, which was sent out in the eutries for thi .second race was not carded. By winning yesterday he became ineligible, as the wmdltions of the race called for non-winners at the meeting. Detroit was the only successful favorite and his victory came only after a hard struggle in which he beat Aunt Kate a scant half length. S. A. Cfopton has already begun to dispose of the horses he is racing here, lie sold three this afternoon. Mrs. W. G. Wilson became the owner of Ida D. John W. Schorr secured Casque and Guy Gray purchased Imprint. Guy Gray sold Kd Keck to J. C. Rous. Jr., his former owner, this morning. Jockeys Troxler and Ieak left for Tampa tonight. The judges handed down their ruling in the Abrasion case this afternoon. The gist of their report is that they found that Glucose came out of his race a sick horse and that Ken Double has a bad knee and was crowded against the inner fencu at the start. They found that 11. D. Williams bet ?3O0 on Glucose and that F. J. 1ons bet 00 on Ken Double. They conclude with Ihe statement that, from their experience, those who are loudest in their denunciation of the race would, when the case reached tins stewards on appeal, be lined up solidly. us witnesses for the defense and would testify that the Jddgcs were lit subjects for a lunacy commission for even thinking of disciplining anyone on the evidence at hand. As a consequence, jockeys Loftus and Obert are reinstated. Concerning the proposal for a state fair as a regular, feature at Moncrlef Park, the Jacksonville Metro- m1 I si litis this to say: "Plans are maturing for the perietuatiou of racing in Florida. While the story lias leon sent broadcast over "tile country by irresjionsible parties that racing Was to cease here January 1, the management lias Ix-eh ..pursuing the even, tenor of its way without tins .slightest uneasiness, and the meeting lias grown aiid flourished until right now it is at its very crest. A knockout blow wns given to idle rumors when during the past week Governor Gilchrist appeared one day at the races and occupied a box witli Mayor Jordan all afternoon. President Cashen took him in charge and showed him all over the tidy plant. The governor seemed to thoroughly enjoy liLs day. No otib made any attempt to get any expression from the governor, but his friends know him to be a broad-minded man. who is deeply conscious of the many- benefits Florida gets from its tourist travel. The order that is maintained on the track has been llic nuirvol of all who come here, and the eople of Florida, who were chary about the proposition, arc beginning to realize that the rank and file of racing piHiple are an orderly, law-abiding class, who only want to be let alone. The managements plans arc to go lxfore the legislature with a proposition to turn .Moncrief Park into a mammoth fair to exploit the jtroducts of Florida, in connection with the racing. Not a fake affair, to cloak the racing, but a real fair, that will be a credit to the whole state. As an evidence of good faith the local people will agree to put up a bond of 00,000 to insure its currying out all of its promises. The plan is meeting with tremendous favor in all sections, and there is no doubt that mmiy, who would bo opposed to a race track pure and simple, will fall into line whth the racing is made only a part of a big public enterprise, it is likely that the local season will be chrtailed and Charleston, and probably Havana, niiitlt; a part of a winter circuit, with the same oflicials. horses and paraphernalia. Several other southern cities are knocking at the door and a circuit can Ikj arranged in such a way that 11k; racing will not be overdone at any one place, and at the same time the shipments will not be suliicicnt to distress liorsetnen."
