OAKLAND WINNERS WELL BACKED. San Francisco, Cal., January 27. Mud runners again had an inning at Oakland today, but favorites and well-supported horses were successful in most of the races. R. J. "Mackenzie took the feature race witli Flying Footsteps, which led all the way. She won by a neck from the fast-closing Dareington. Matador was plunged on in the fifth and won from Hampass. The colors of Capt. E. 15. Cassatt were curried to victory for the first time here when The BailllTs Daughter won the closing nice. The Walker-Young- bill, which, when it becomes a law, may mean the end of racing in this state, was" passed yesterday by the Senate by a vote of 30 lo 4. Not a single speech was made against the measure, while Senator Walker, the author of the bill, was the only senator to speak in favor of its passage. The bill lias gone tO the assembly, and political Jeaders are predicting that racing will come to an end in this state by February 15. The majority for it in tlie lower branch of the lcgisla-lure is expected to Ik; proportionate witli that in tlie senate and Governor Johnson is expected to sign tlie hill as quickly as it lias been passed by IkMIi houses. The law will liecome effective fifteen days after, its approval. Jockey Eddie Jones received word from Belgium that jockey Birkenruth was seriously injured in a race at Brussels and that lie is paralyzed from tlie hips down.
