M0NCRIEF FAVORITES ARE ALL BEATEN. Closing Race Marred by an Accident Kerran, a Supposed Good Thing, Fails to Deliver, Jacksonville, Fla., January ."0. Favorites were bowled over with a regularity that was paiuful at Moncrief this afternoon. The six public choices wont down to defeat and but two of the winners were second choices. The biggest upset of the afternoon came with the running of the fifth Tace. in which Wander, at 50 to 1. boat the odds-on favorite. Alfred the Great. The former won in the closing stride and the margin that separated the two was scarcely discernible. In the closing race an accident came directly after the start when Ben Howe was crowded and fell; He rolled over jockey Kohn and bruised the latter quite si bit. The winner, Klfall, swerved to the inside in the homestretch, interfering with both Ed Keck and Galley Slave and the judges deliberated about ten minutes before lowering ihe ollicial sign on the placing. One of the hottest tips of the meeting developed iu the second race, in which Kerran was made favorite. The winner turned up in Oghwaga, which beat J. B. Itobinson and Kerran by a couple of lengths. Sister Florence won the first race in easy fashion. Todays victory was the second consecutive one scored by this filly and it looks as if she might develop into a fair sort. Sister Florence is owned by Mrs. II. II. Selby. Two claims were put in for Alfred the Great after ie was beaten and in the drawing A. J. Walser, owner of Royal Onyx, got the horse for ,223. Ardri. favorite in the closing dash, broke down after going about half a mile and was pulled up. In the same race Ben Howe ran away three miles after falling at the start. He finally ran into the outer fence at the head of the stretch and stopped. S. P. llyman returned from Tampa witli his stable this morning. John Lewis, a recent arrival from California, joined the ranks of the layers at Moncrief today. Frank Uackett. a well-known docker, was also an arrival from the coast. Jockey A. Lang lias quit the employ of E. AV. lleffner and has signed to do the riding for W. Shields. It. Thompson, owner of Aspirin, and J. C. Goode, of Lexington, arrived this morning. John Powers has arranged to train the horses owned by I. B. I.radfield. E. J. Ryan wired that he would he, here from California in a few days. Recent work-outs at Moncrief.
