NOTES OF THE TURF. Matt Byrnes is to re-enter racing as a trainer. Piestolito died at Juarez recently from fever contracted on route from Oakland. George W. Berry will race the three-year-old Tim Judge and twelve two-year-olds for A. B. Spreckels in the east until midsummer, when he will return to California to look after the Spreckels yearlings. The liberal clement is again in control of things at Hot Springs, Ark., and W. AV. Waters, who recently worsted the reform candidate in the primary contest for mayor, has come out strongly for legislation that will iKirmit racing at Oaklawn and Essex Parks. Two noted mares were lost to Canadian breeding bv the recent deaths of Princess Flavia and Lyddite. The last named won the Kings Plate for the late Mr. Hcndrie in 1902. and when retired to the Valley Farm she leeaine the dam of Shiinouese. the Plate winner of two years ago. Princess Flavia. a daughter of Prince Rudolph, the last of the Prince Charlies, showed superior class on the turf, but was an unfortunate breeder, and several of her progeny met with mishaps that prevented their training.
