NEW TYPE OF MACHINES FOR XOUISVILLE. Louisville, Ky.. March 7. Col. Matt J. Winn, who in here on a flying trip from Juarez to Inspect the Improvements in progress at Churchill Downs, in cotnpanv with president C F. Grainger of the New Louisville Jockey Club, yesterday inspected the new fiari-mutuel machines which are being built -at the Grainger machine shops. These machines will prove a revelation to the public when they are seen iu operation at the Downs this spring. One operator will be in charge of each machine and there will be twenty-one in line. The amount of money haudled in each machine will be indicated on the large register in dollars, so that the public can tell at any time the exact number of dollars wagered on a King ft- horse as well as the total number of dollars -.vagered on the race. When the new machines are located at the Downs they will give the betting ring the appearance of a well-conducted counting-house. The old paddock at the Downs lias been removed and in its stead the new offices of the jockey club are being erected. Further to the east of the old liaddock a new one is leing built, which is designed lo be one of the most up-to-date in the country. 7ev roadways are being built and 100 trees have been planted at the old course Colonel Winn is enthusiastic over the prospects of tbe spring meeting. He said: "I believe ever? uoted horsemen and good horse in the country will be here, as owners have been notified that none of the purses will he for less than 00 aud the overnight handicaps will be and Slt00. It has alwavs been the policy of the New Ixuiisville Jockey Club to be liberal with the men that race the horses." Colonel Winn will return to El Paso Thursday to jremaln until April 2, when racing at Juarez ends ior the season.
