NOW FOR FLORIDA SPECIAL WEIGHTS ASSIGNED FOR 5,000 RACE TO BE RUN AT JACKSONVILLE NEXT SATURDAY. Patronage of Meeting at Moncrief Park Keeping Up Wonderfully Well to End of Season Donald Macdonald Wins Ocala Handicap. Jacksonville. Fla., March 11. It is really surprising how luring these closing days of the long winter meeting at Moncrief Park the patronage is keeping up. The crowds are much larger than at the same time last season and speculation is us keen as during the height of the season. There are several reasons for this, the principal one of which was the closing down of racing at Oakland. Many professional followers of racing who patronized the California track are here, and their presence has infused new life into the sport. One of the richest stakes of the meeting is carded 1o be run on Saturday next, when all of the cracks participating in the racing here will go to the post to. battle for the ,000 Florida Special. This is a handicap at one mile and a quarter. Of the forty-five original entries, thirty-six remain eligible to start. Those declared on January 1 were High Private. Protend, Live Wire, Everett. Reyboum, Gar-neau. Fulfill, Owanux and Judge Monck. The board of handlcappers have assigned top weight to the lteverwyck Stables good racer, Sir John Johnson, lie is asked to shoulder 131 pounds, and it is doubtful if his trainer will send him to the post. Donald Macdonald and Countless are given 125, and last years1 American Derby winner. Polls, gets in at 1-2. Lady Ormicant ami Harney Igoe are at the lottom of the list at SO pounds. Kings Daughter is in nicely at Hp pounds. It was given out that this mare did not fancy the going at Moncrief, and after her poor showing the first time that she started, it was said that she would be reserved for Kentucky racing. She was started back, liowever, a few days later and won a seven-eighths race in 1:272. There is no question as to the mares class, and if T. C. Mc-kl low ell deciles to start her she is likely to be a factor. Countless, despite his 123 pounds, will, proli ablv be the favorite. J. W. May found fault With the weight assigned bis charge, but that was to le expected; Countless is in extra good condition, according to report. His owner, John G. Greener, will probably ,rome down with a party of friends from Nashville to see blm run In this stake. Trainer Schorr is pointing Banives for this stake, and if he continues to train well he will be a- starter. Banives was a promising racer last summer before he went wrong, and his owner won several big bets with blm. The following shows the assignment of weights: Horse. A.Wt. Horse. A.Wt. Fred Gerhardy, who is here looking after the interests of the Jamestown Jockey Club, announces that reservations for stabling accommodations have been made by the following horscinc-ii at the Norfolk track: E. Smithson and Silas Veitch. The card provided by the Moncrief management this afternoon was one of the best of the season. Class was represented in a majority of the races and fast time was recorded. Favorites won the last four races and throe of them were at odds-on. The feature, the Ocala Handicap, was overshadowed in a measure by the third race, a seven-eighths allowance affair, which brought out some of the cracks. Countless was top weight, under 125 pounds, and the best Jie could seemingly do was to finish third. T. M. Green won by a neck in a hard drive with The Nigger. Countless was beaten two lengths. His race this afternoon was part of his preparation for the Florida Special. The Ocala Handicap went to Donald Macdonald, which made a runaway affair of the race and won with something to spare by a length from the Derbv colt. Star Charter. Donald Macdonald carried 125 pounds and ran the mile and an eighth in 1:53?, a good performance over this track. He, too, will be a starter in the Florida Special, and Loftus, who rode him today, will have the mount. Thomas McDowell furnished the winner in the two-voar-olds race In Star Jasamhie, which won in a romp bv a couple of lengths from Mack H. Eubanks, the odds-on favorite, with Duval third aiength back. It Is said that the latter showed indications of an attack of the skin disease which is so prevalent he.re this winter; J. W. May will ship the stable be is racing here 1o Louisville after the running of the Florida .Special on Saturday next. Working Lad, carded as a starter in the first race, was taken sick last night and trainer George Ham was compelled to scratch him. Mike Daly announced that he would probably send the three-year-old Barney Igoe to the post in the American Derby to be run April I. .
