PONS COLORS PROMINENT FLORIDA TURFMAN SCORES A DOUBLE WITH FONT AND EDNA COLLINS. Floral Queen. Runs Away at Post and Wagors on Her Arc Refunded by Order of Judges Success of P. M. Walker Continues. Jacksonville, Fla., March 28. Tho colors of F. J. Pons were conspicuously successful at Moncrlef Park this afternoon. Two of the wiunors. Font and Edna Collins, came from the Florida turfmans stable. Both were favorites and incidentally they were the only decided choices that won. The track had dried out considerably, but the going w,as still lumpy and heavy iu spots. Despite the strong counter attraction of tho automobile races at Pablo Beach, a large crowd turned out to witness the sport. In the closing race. Floral Queen, ono of tho field or thirteen that went to the post, got the better of jockey Dunn and, running away, bolted out of the gates into the stable yards and disappeared on a. long stretch of road adjoining the track. The judges ordered all money wagered on Floral Queeu refunded, but the other betting stood. The closest finish of the afternoon came with the running of the first race, a two-year-old dash of four and a half furlongs. In which the first three fought it out, with Maxentius first at the finish by a nose. Tho latter was running In the colors of P. M. Walker for the first time. Maxentius had also won for J. W. Panglc at the first time of asking iu that owners colors. The biggest upset of the afternoon was furnished by G. M. Miller, au odds-on choice in the third race. The Simons horse nattered his backers by going into a lead of four lengths while rounding the far turn, but when Kingship challenged iu the homestretch he quit. The conditions of this race called for four-year-olds and upward that had not been placed, at the meeting. Jockey Byrne piloted three winners, Maxentius, Kingship and Font. Between the races J. W. Schorrs Derby candidate. Star Charter, was sent a mile and a rurlong in 2:00. Tho fractional time was 27, 52. 1:10, 1:404, 2:0ft.- "A. L. Kirby has purchased of It. D. WBliams the three-year-old Decclvable aud will ship her to Lexington. Miss Nett was jumped on in her race yesterday and had a tendon severed. An effort will be made to save her for breeding purposes. Before leaving for Lexington J. S. Hawkins sold My Henry to R. II. Clark. A number of race-goers who took part in the racing at Tampa were among the visitors at Moncrlef this afternoon. Included among them were C. O. Smith. Clint Colby, W. Wolff. Ed Leavy. S. Abrams and Dan McCarthy. They left before the last race to catch a train for Pensacola. Eagle Bird and Double Five wilt bo coupled in tomorrows stake race because they are both trained by James Hewitt. The Jacksonville Metropolis comments on conditions, at Moncrlef Park as follows: "It is really remarkable how interest iu the meeting here keeps up. It is an object lessou to the racu track people themselves, as it shows that the public will patronize and support a cleanly and well-conducted meeting for any reasonable length of time. At tllfi stage of a winter meeting usually things get a lit tie frayed around the edges, but there is no evi donee, of it bore, and one has only to look over tho crowds to realize that the elite and fashion of tho cast and the north who have chosen Florida for their winter playground, arc at Moucrief daily, mixing with the best of local people. Among the crowds that are daily here iu attendance are mauy of tUi legislators who will have the future of racing in this state in their hands next month. All of them without exception have marvelled at the class of people attending and tho perfect order that is maintained. Many who have come only to get their impressions at first hand have become interested in the sport and have remained to etijoy themselves. The system of giving duplicate copies of the decisions of the judges to the press lias been generally commended by the rank and file of the race goers. The public is as much interested in the work of the officials as In the racing itself, and as they pay th; bills they are entitled to have their wants satis-lied. There is nothing in gum shoe tactics on a raco track; and when a bad race comes up the thing to do is to put tho offenders away for all time without any grandstand plays. The public eye is keen. enough ti see through any coat of whitewash, and when tho brush is applied they lose confidence. There is not half the fraud on a raco track that some pcopla affect to think, ami not any more than there is in any other legitimate business, the ouly difference being that in many cases what would be regarded as business, acumen iu ordinary affairs lands the offender on the outside of the race tracks sates. In no place in the world is so rigid a discipline maintained as on a race track, and iu no place in the world are thu men in authority shown the same resiwct by those who are iu their hands. The association lias made good every promise this. year anil in fact has gone beyond some. They promised to give away 02,000. and by the time the extra handicap will have been run next week that amount will have reached almost ,000 more." Reeent work-outs at Moncrlef Park.
