THINKS WELL OF ADAM BEDE. I . - . A New York, April C. Philip J. Dwyer is an American horseman who has an idea that John Maddcns; big colt, Adam Bode, recently shipped to Joe Caunonl atfiNejvniar.ket to be trained for the coming Epsom! Derby, will make his mark on the other side. The! president of the Brooklyn Jockey Club is well iu-l formed about Atlaui Bede. The big chestnut trained: at his Gravcsend race track last spring, and MrJ Dwyer saw liihi work many times with Thoinasi Monahans Textile, a sou of Inflexible, which be-i came one of the good twoycar-olds of the year. Before Adain Bede bruised a foot galloping at Gravescnd. just after his only start, lie "could go with Textile stride for stride. Mr.; Dwyer coincides: with Thomas Welsh in the opinion that Adam Bede: would have, figured as a first-rate. American two-year-: old if he. had not injured himself. "Im not saying. of course," Mi-. Dwyer remarked, "that Adam Bede: will win the Derby. Winning the Epsom Derby is a big order. But I have an idea that if he keeps; sound lie will hold his end up in other races. Hcj is, a powerfully set up horse of good bone, with healthy, legs and feet, and his action is smooth and; easy.. A colt of such size, with such action, should: manage, weight well, and carry his speed auv dis-i tance.7 Mr. Dwyer spent several months of last fall and winter in Europe, where he saw some racing. !! does not subscribe to the theory that American! horses are poorly treated by the hundicappers in England. . . . "The American invaders of the island kingdom have to carry big weight in their first few races," the president of the Brooklyn Jockey Club says, "because lhey genarally go over with a blare "of trumpets. The American papers are full of stories: of how good, they are. These flaring encomiums! scare the handicappers. and they put big weight on: the invader for fear he may run in oii"thein. You firn-t blame theni- for. it, either. When the formj of the invader is .established he is not asked to perform, impossible feats in the line of packing weight."
