BY SAIN EL SAX ADO, Full of such honors as may accrue to a race liorse through many exhibitions of superlative speed. Jack Atkin has been retired from the track to the peaceful repose and rest of a future at Woodlands Stud. Next to Koseben he was the best sprinter of recent years and almost the equal of that famous liorse as a weight carrier. Moreover, he was a much better stayer than the Itig Train and up to a considerable route when trained for it. a statement confirmed by his signal success in the 0,000 Dominion Handicap last year over a mile and a quarter course at Fort Rrie. In that event he carried 117 pounds and ran the distance in 2:04, setting a new Canadian record and defeating .such crack stayers as Olambala and Donald Macdonald lu doing this he removed the reproach previously attaching to his name to the effect he could not stav. but the fact remains that a mile fitted his notions more than a longer distance and it was as a sprinter "and a I miler that he was at his best. Jack Atkiu won more mouey than any oilier liorse ever bled at Woodlands and also won bv- far more money for Harney Schreiber than any other liorse he ever owned. He was a great traveler and a hardv one With New York tracks. Canadian tracks. California trucks. Kentucky. Louisiana and Florida tracks, he was i entirely familiar and wound up his racing with a mine too successful visit to the Mexican track at Juarez. In the course of his long and honorable career he wea many of the highly regarded stake races of the country. In the Metropolitan Handicap of 1J0S he won with 12S pounds up, being the greatest weight ever carried by a winner of that great race. Among the stake races he won the now abolished Nurserv Stakes : at Louisville. Claremont Handicap at Belmont Park. Carter Handicap at Aqueduct, Kex ITr.ndicapat New Orleans. Parkway Handicap at Gravesend. Mt. Vernon Handicap and Fleetwing Handicap at Knipire Citv Flight: Stakes at Sheepshead Bay. Richmond Handicap at Jamaica. Montague Stakes "at Jamaica lhambi-l Stakes at Santa Anita, S!. John Handicap at Jacksonville, Omnium Handicap at Latonia Tainpico Il-indi-cap at Juarez, Queens County Handicap at Aqueduct and the Crotona Handicap at Belmont Park rank as ; the most Important, other than the two big events previously named. In the Richmond Handicap ho ran three-uuarters of a mile in .1:1:5, earn ing i:;s pounds. In the Fli-ht Stakes, with 12l! pounds up. he ran seven-eighths in 1:2.. He won the Fleetwing Handicap at Knipire Citv at three-quarters in 1:12. with DiO Hounds in the saddle ami at the same track and distance won in l-l""" when carrying 140 pounds. At Jacksonville. Fla., he ran live-eighths of a mile twice in 5 eirrviii- V" j pounds in one race and 140 in the other. At Gravesend lie hail up 121 pounds when he won tlie Purkwiv Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, m such fast time as l:4r.-rf,. and won the Metropolitan Il indie-in Vt 1 a mile iu 1:3S, with ease. Whether Jack Atkin is to rival Sain as a sire remains to b" seen On his sires side ho is purely Ruglish bred and almost as purely American bred on the side of bis dam This is . biood combination rare at this time and students of breeding will await results with more thvi nr.iiim-v interest.
