I i : ; j 1 MORE EAIN AT JAMESTOWN PUBLIC FINDS IT EASY TO SELECT WINNERS UNDER CHANGED TRACK CONDITIONS. Four Favorites Among Days Winners in Sloppy Going Vreeland Scores An Easy Victory in Handicap Unruly Filly Delays Juvenile Race. Norfolk. Va., April 15. Weather conditions this afternoon were not of the kind that are conducive to the enjoyment of outdoor sport. A cold drlzzllug rain fell throughout the day and the Jamestown Jockey Clubs race course was not the most pleasant spot that one could find. The track was sloppy, with a hard bottom which gave good footing. The change in the going cut but little figure with, calculations, as the days results showed four favorites and two well-backed second choices finishing; first. The feature race, the Tidewater Handicap, proved easy Tor Vreeland. He took the lead soon after the start and after rounding the turn into the backstretch drew away from his company, and was only cantering at the end, where he led Anteuoi by half a dozen lengths. The Belmont stable started a liniidsome-lookiug filly iu the opening dash iu Lady Paramount, ami her looks alone earned her some support. Lady Paramount is about the craziest-acting tilly that ever went to the post. She was nervous in the paddock, anil in rearing up she struck her head against the roof and received quite a jar. All went well until she got to within about a hundred yards of the post, when she spread out like a mustang and refused to move. Finally, in rearing up, she unseated jockey Warrington and galloped around the track to the- grandstand, where she was caught and .led hack to the starting point. After a delay of twenty-two minutes the field was dispatched -with Lady Paramount last to leave the, post. Bill Lamb proved an easy winner. Capsize shouldered 120 pounds in the fifth raeo and beat a poor lot iu handy fashion. Despite the fact that he outclassed his company, the layers ipioted a liberal price against him and some of the big operators profited handsomely over his victory. He was ridden by jockey Jimmy Kohl and incident ally it marked the last appearance of this rider iu the saddle lu this country for the present season at least. Keid has arranged to sail for Friqicc shortly to ride for Herman I,. Pnryca. Besides winning with Capsize, he also lauded Bill Lamb winner in the two-year-old race. Harvey F.s victory in the closing dash resulted in a change of ownership. He was entered to he sold Tor Sgivo and after his victory William Walker boosted lii.ni to fl.OO and secured him at that figure. Frank R. Gardner, former owner of Statesman, who Is now handling the Nursery-bred Babbler, has IhhU iipiHiiuted starting judge by the Jamestown Jockey Club. The apiKiinttjient was" made at the suggestion of steward Frank J. Bryan, who is making an effort to stamp out the rough riding here. .Mr. Gardner has adopted the plan -which prevails at the Juarez track of locating about 100 yards from the starting ijlnt. which gives liim an unobstructed view of the field after the start. Banives, which was a starter in the Tidevatcr Handicap, bled during the running of the race, which accounted for his poor showing.
